I See You is the upcoming third studio album by the English indie pop band The xx, planned for release on 13 January 2017 on the Young Turks label.[1] It is the follow-up to their sophomore album Coexist, and is their first release in more than four years.
The band announced the album while announcing frequent collaborator Rodaidh McDonald for its production and reportedly working on it on May 2014. Member Jamie xx released his solo debut In Colour in May 2015 and reflected that it would influence the sound and aesthetic of I See You.
The band has stated that the record will have a more distinctive sound and a more positive, open and "expansive" concept than the previous two albums. It was promoted with the lead single; "On Hold", released 12 November 2016.
Background and production
After the release of The xx's studio album, Coexist in 2012, the band announced that they were working on a follow-up to their sophomore effort on May 2014, and that they were recording at Marfa Recording Co. in Marfa, Texas with producer Rodaidh McDonald.[2] Meanwhile, fellow band member and producer Jamie xx released his solo debut, In Colour, in May 2015 and stated that his debut would reflect the new album's concept and departure from their sound. The album was recorded between March 2014 and August 2016 at studios in New York City, Los Angeles, Marfa, London, and Reykjavík.[1]
On November 2015, the band would continue working on the album until December and slated the new album's release for 2016.[3] However, on October 2016, they announced that they were still recording the album, but shared a curated playlist and added tour dates.[4] On November 7, snippets of possible songs were posted to the band's Spotify page, with the album's possible title and songs posted on Shazam via Reddit users.[5] On November 10, the album and its release date was officially announced.
Composition
The album, as stated by Jamie xx, has "definitely informed what we're doing", and will be a departure from the previous sound marked by Coexist and xx, as well as a "completely different concept".[6] The band also stated that the album is "more outward-looking, open and expansive".[7]
