Innovation Center Denmark is a consultant cooperative that bridges Danish technology companies with Silicon Valley organizations. Innovation Center Denmark’s objective is to connect research, investors, entrepreneurs and companies together as well as provide advisory services for Danish companies seeking to expand or establish business into Silicon Valley. Innovation Center Denmark is a joint effort between The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. It’s headquartered in Palo Alto, California, but also has offices in Munich, New Delhi, São Paulo, Seoul, Shanghai, and Tokyo.[1][2]
History
On June 4, 2006, His Royal Highness, Prince Joachim of Denmark opened Innovation Center Denmark in Palo Alto, California. This Center, in Silicon Valley, set out to be a pilot project tasked with creating a sustainable, innovative business model. The result hereof was a decision to open the next Innovation Center Denmark in Shanghai in September 2007.
Organization
Innovation Center Denmark is a co-operation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (The Danish Trade Council and Invest in Denmark) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
Innovation Center Denmark is a result of the Danish government’s globalization strategy with the objective to turn Denmark into a leading knowledge based economy by 2016. This objective calls for new approaches to position Denmark in the global value chain.
Innovation Center Denmark is the sixth Danish diplomatic mission in the U.S. and attempts a close relationship and co-operation with the Danish Embassy in Washington, and the four Danish Trade Representations.
Objectives
The objective of Innovation Center Denmark is to link companies, investors, research and innovation communities in Denmark and Silicon Valley. As part of this role, the objective is for it to facilitate the entry of high potential Danish companies into Silicon Valley, to attract inbound investment into Denmark and serve as the link between research and innovation environments in the U.S. and Denmark.
The focus is on traditional Silicon Valley clusters, i.e. ICT (Information & Communication Technology), Life Sciences, Clean Tech and related areas like design and education.
Services
Innovation Center Denmark offers a services to support the different objectives for the center. All services are customized to each assignment in order to ensure the most beneficial output for the client.
The services are delivered in close cooperation with external strategic partners and supported by the other Danish Representations in the U.S.

Silicon Valley Entry
Market assessment / Initial market research to support Review Board presentation
- Silicon Valley Review Board / Business model review and feedback from panel of local business leaders including gap analysis
- Entry Planning / Design of entry planning to close the gaps identified by the Review Board
- Silicon Valley Platform / Flexible and affordable establishment of a home base in Silicon Valley
- Establish U.S. entity / Facilitate professional services to establish U.S. legal entity
- Networking / Access to specific networks based on individual needs
- Revenue Generator / Identify channel partners and set up distribution
- Innovation 101 / 2-day workshop in co-operation with leading local resources focusing on value innovation and customer focused business models
Capital Connection
- VC Connection / Groom business models and project presentation before establishing targeted contact to U.S. Venture Capital (Business Plan Review is prerequisite)
Connected Research
- Innovation Watch / Identify shifts in the strategic focus of global companies along with new innovative initiatives within research in order to represent Danish interests
- Research Connections/ Links between Danish and U.S. research institutions. Long term or project based
- Academic conferences and workshops/The planning, funding and implementation of joint California-Denmark conferences and workshops in any academic discipline
Invest in Denmark
- Facilitate inbound investment into Denmark / Focus on establishing R&D departments in the categories if ICT, life science and clean tech
- Benchmarking / targeted benchmarking against alternative locations.
