Institute Menezes Braganza is a cultural institution from Goa, India, which seeks to promote language and literature, art and culture in the State. It was formerly known as the Institute Vasco da Gama and established on 24 November 1871. It was originally set up by the Portaria Provincial No. 332 dated 24 November 1871.
Renamed
After the end of Portuguese rule in Goa, it was renamed after a prominent campaigner against colonial rule. It was financed by the Government of Goa. In 1997, the Government of Goa took over the institution, and re-established it as a society under the Indian Registration of Societies Act, 1860.
According to official documents, its aims are to "focus mainly on the promotion of activities in the fields of Language, Literature, Art & Culture in Goa".[1] It also "primarily seeks to promote Goan talent in allied areas and to meet the versatile cultural interests of Goan society as a whole."
Collaborations
It collaborates with other "like-minded" institutions such as the Indian National Book Trust, New Delhi, Sahitya Akademi, the Goa Konkani Akademi, the Gomantak Marathi Akademi, Gomantak Sahitya Sevak Mandal, among others. It is located in the heart of Panjim, the state-capital of Goa, and has recently renovated its halls, as of 2013.
Activities
Among other activities, it organises symposia, panel discussions, quizzes, lecturers, talks, debates, elocution contests, recitals and performances, conferences, seminars, literary festivals, poets' meets, workshops, exhibitions, competitions, publishes books, seminar papers, souvenirs, pamphlets, conference proceedings and creates databases. Earlier, it was known for publishing regularly its Bulletin of the Institute Menezes Braganza.
1997 change
In 1997, the Pratapsing Rane Government in Goa moved by law[2] to allow for the:
- Dissolution of the Managing Committee, if any, of the Institute Vasco-da-Gama, now known as Institute Menezes Braganza;
- Adjudication of claims, if any, and payment of compensation for any claims, from any person, who had prior to the 17th day of April, 1997 (called as the "appointed day"), any interest in any of the assets of the said Institute;
- Handing over of the assets, books of records and whatever properties of the said Institute, by a person presently holding such properties or records in his custody;
- Repeal of all laws and orders whichever in existence on the appointed day governing or in any manner concerning the affairs of the said Institute.
