Jay Wintrob was born in Anaheim, California.[2] He is the CEO of investment firm Oaktree Capital Management.[3]

Education

Wintrob received a B.A. in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, graduating with highest honors in 1979. He followed with a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law in 1982.[4][5][6] In law school, Wintrob was elected to the Order of the Coif.[2]

Career

Wintrob began his career as an associate at the law firm of O’Melveny & Myers. In 1987, he entered financial services as Assistant to the Chairman of SunAmerica Inc. (f/k/a Kaufman and Broad Inc.), and then went on to serve in several other executive positions, including President of SunAmerica Investments, Inc.[4][5]

In 1998, SunAmerica was acquired by American International Group, Inc. Wintrob was Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of AIG Retirement Services, Inc. from 1998 to 2001, and President and Chief Executive Officer from 2001 to 2009. From 2009-2014, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of AIG Life and Retirement.[3] During his last year with the company, the Life & Retirement unit of AIG that Wintrob headed contributed just over half of AIG's pretax operating income from its insurance businesses (approximately $5.1 billion).[7][8]

Wintrob, who first met Oaktree co-founder Bruce Karsh during their mutual employment at O’Melveny & Myers, has served as a director of Oaktree Capital Management since September 2011. Wintrob became the first CEO in Oaktree’s history upon his appointment in 2014.[9]

Charitable Efforts

Wintrob has served as a board member of several non-profit organizations, including The J.Paul Getty Trust, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, CalTech, The J.Paul Getty Trust, The Los Angeles World Affairs Council and Wilshire Boulevard Temple. Today he serves as the Vice Chairman of The Broad Foundations and on the boards of the Skirball Cultural Center[3][6] and the Los Angeles Music Center.[10]

Wintrob has received the Ecumenical Council Leadership Award from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (2001) and the Luis Lainer Founder's Award from Bet Tzedek Legal Services (2002).[6]

Personal life

Wintrob is married to Wendy Wintrob, and the couple has two children.[2] The Wintrobs are members of Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles.[1]
