Jim Walker (economist)
Dr. Jim Walker is a Hong Kong-based independent economist and investment strategist, the Founder and Chief Economist of Asianomics Group Ltd.,[1] an economic research and consultancy company servicing the fund management industry. In 2016, he started an economic newsletter called "Wealthy Nations". He also serves as a Non-Executive Director of Leopard Cambodia Fund[2] and Director of India Capital Management.[3]
Prior to establishing Asianomics in 2007, Dr. Walker was the chief economist at CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets. He joined CLSA in late 1991. Walker was voted best 'regional economist' by the Asiamoney Stockbrokers Poll for 11 years in a row from 1994-2004 and has been regularly acclaimed in the private Greenwich Surveys of fund managers in Asia, Europe and the USA.[4] Walker is best known for forecasting the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the 2007 US downturn and the financial sector meltdown. He maintains a bearish outlook on Quantitative Easing policies and is an adherent of the Austrian School of economics.[5][6][7][8] Dr. Jim frequently updates his social media profiles[9][10] with quips of his personal economic views, many of which are summarised in a monthly commentary he publishes called Wealthy Nations.[11]
Before coming to Asia, Walker worked in Scotland as a research fellow at the Fraser of Allander Institute for Research on the Scottish Economy, and then at The Royal Bank of Scotland’s Edinburgh headquarters. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (Honours) and a PhD in economics from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.
