Jonas Carpignano is an Italian film director know the film Mediterranea.[1][2][3]

Early life and career

Born in New York to an Italian father and an African-American mother, and partly raised in Rome, he spent his childhood between New York City and Rome. He began making films at Wesleyan University. His work as a director has been shown at the Cannes Film Festival,[4] Venice Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival.

Awards

He has received the Gotham Independent Film Awards 2015[5] for his first feature film Mediterranea that also earned him the Gotham Independent Film Awards and was named the best directorial debut of 2015 by the National Board of Review. As a screenplay writer he received the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. In 2016 he was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship.[6]

Personal life

Carpignano lives in Italy, where he continues to work as a writer and director.
