Awards Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross

Josef Mathes (4 February 1908 – 19 September 1944) was a highly decorated Oberwachtmeister in the Wehrmacht during World War II. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Josef Mathes was killed in action on 19 September 1944 during the Battle of Arnhem. He was posthumosuly awarded the Knight's Cross on 4 October 1944.
