KXGN-DT2 is the NBC affiliated television station that is located in and licensed to Glendive, Montana, which is the smallest of the 210 US Nielsen-designated broadcast television markets, and the smallest television market in the North American continent.[1] The station is the second digital subchannel of CBS and Montana Television Network affiliated KXGN-TV, which is owned by Glendive Broadcasting Corporation.
KXGN-DT2's parent station's studios are located in downtown Glendive.
History
At first, KXGN's primary feed carried a secondary NBC affiliation along with its primary CBS affiliation. The only other television station that carried the full NBC schedule was K13PL, which was a low-powered translator of KUMV-TV of Williston, North Dakota, which served as the default NBC affiliate for the Glendive area. That translator was shut down in 2013.
In June 2009, at around the time of the digital television transition, KXGN-TV's digital signal's capacity allowed the station to move its NBC affiliation to a new second digital subchannel, hence making the main feed a full-time CBS affiliate.
Cable television is still necessary to receive all the other broadcast television networks in the Glendive market. KUMV-DT2 remains the default Fox affiliate, while the default ABC affiliate is KHSD-TV of Lead, South Dakota, which is a satellite of KOTA-TV of Rapid City. The signals of KUMV, KUMV-DT2 and KHSD-TV are available on a few translators in the area. Furthermore, Me-TV is also available from KUMV-DT3 via the third subchannel of KUMV-operated translators.[2]
Both subchannels are also available on KXGN-TV's digital translators.
KXGN-DT2 was named as a charter affiliate of the proposed .2 Network which was to have begin broadcast sometime in 2008; it never signed on.[3]
Programming
All of NBC's programming is available on KXGN-DT2. However, all newscasts are simulcast from KULR-TV of Billings, Montana. syndicated programming on KXGN-DT2 include The Dr. Oz Show, Right This Minute, Entertainment Tonight, The People's Court, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.[4]
