K. M. Chandrasekhar (born February 20, 1948) is a retired Indian civil servant, who was the 29th Cabinet Secretary of the Republic of India. He is now the Vice-Chairman of the Kerala State Planning Board.

He is a 1970 batch Indian Administrative Service officer from Kerala Cadre.[2]

Early life and education

K. M. Chandrasekhar was born in Kerala to Kesava Menon, who was Chairman of the Railway Service Commission. After graduating from college, he got an MA in history from the University of Delhi. He then earned his M.A. in Management Studies from the University of Leeds.

Career

Chandrasekhar earlier served as the Revenue Secretary of India and also India's Ambassador to WTO in Geneva before which he was a Joint Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Commerce.[3] Chandrasekhar was the first IAS officer at Director of Fisheries in Kerala and Managing Director(MD) of Civil Supplies in Ernakulam.

He was appointed as the Vice Chairman of the Kerala State Planning Board with Cabinet rank on 15-June-2011, two days after he retired as Cabinet Secretary.

Personal life

K. M. Chandrasekhar is married to Jaya Chandrasekhar. Their only daughter is an alumnus of IIT Chennai & IIM Bangalore, who now heads the Automotive Component Manufacturers' Association in Bangalore.
