Kelly Geoffrey (born 25 January 1990) is a Canadian ice hockey player who plays as an import Left Winger for the CBR Brave in the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL). Kelly has previously represented the province of Ontario at the Canada Winter Games.
Playing career
Club career
Geoffrey played extensive junior hockey in Canada in predominantly the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). After impressing in midgets for Markham Waxers with an astonishing 124 point season, Kelly was selected to participate in the Ontario Hockey League Showcase Cup to provide OHL clubs with additional scouting opportunities for emerging talent from the midget leagues.[1] Geoffrey impressed and was picked up by Erie Otters who selected him as their third round (#44th overall) draft pick from the OHL Priority Selection.[1] Kelly played consistently for the Otters over two seasons before moving around to the Kingston Frontenacs, Mississauga St. Michael's Majors and St. Catharines Falcons in three consecutive seasons.[2] At the end of Kelly's youth club career he had amassed the impressive statistics of 115 goals and 149 assists from 316 games while spending 264 minutes in the penalty box.[1]
In 2011 Geoffrey attended Ryerson University and played hockey in the CIS for Ryerson's university team Ryerson Rams.[3] Geoffrey was injured during a match by taking a puck to the cheekbone from a slapshot to the face that prematurely ended his season with the Rams and led Kelly to miss three years of hockey. In that time Kelly completed university and returned to health following a series of surgeries to his face.[4]
In 2015, Geoffrey was contacted by CBR Brave's new head coach, Brad Hunt, who convinced Kelly via Skype to return to the sport by flying out to Australia to play for the Brave in the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL). Soon after being contacted and building a repour with Hunt Geoffrey signed for the CBR Brave for the 2015 AIHL season as one of the club's import players.[5]
25 April 2015, Geoffrey made his debut for the CBR Brave in the opening round weekend of the AIHL when the Brave took on the Sydney Bears at home in front of a packed Brave Cave. The Brave beat the bears 4-2 with Kelly scoring the fourth and final goal of the game in the third period. Kelly also assisted the Brave's opening goal of the season in the first period of the match.[6]
Geoffrey continued his goal scoring form for the Brave with a streak lasting seven games in a row including two hat tricks in a row on the same weekend against the Adelaide Adrenaline and Newcastle North Stars. By Kelly's seventh game he had amassed 22 points with 12 goals and 10 assists.[7] This form led Brave's head coach Brad Hunt to claim Geoffrey as the surprise signing of the season.[8]
On 9 August 2015, Kelly achieved the milestone mark of 50 points for the season with the Brave after scoring five points in the Brave's 6-3 victory over the Perth Thunder where Geoffrey scored a hat trick and assisted in another two goals.[9][10][11]
Personal life
Kelly was born on 25 January 1990.[1] Geoffrey studied at Ryerson University in downtown Toronto, Canada. Before joining the Brave Kelly had never played hockey in an ice rink without glass.[5]
