Kim Weston (photographer)

Kim Weston (born 1953) is an American photographer known for his fine art nude studies.

Kim Weston is a third-generation member of one of the most important and influential families in modern photography. His recognition as a singularly creative artist and photographer continues a family legacy that traces its roots back to his grandfather Edward Weston, one of the true visionaries in the history of the photographic medium, as well as his uncle Brett Weston, who achieved international fame as a master of black and white abstract photography.

Kim’s father Cole Weston is also recognized as a pioneer in large-format fine art color photography, and it was while working as a darkroom assistant for his father, who produced numerous gallery prints from Edward Weston’s original negatives, that Kim first learned the craft of photography. Kim further refined and mastered the craft of fine art black and white photography working as an assistant to his uncle Brett.

In a career spanning four decades, Kim Weston has come to be recognized in his own right as one of the most insightful and accomplished practitioners of figurative/nude photography, producing an extensive and masterful portfolio of work that draws deeply, yet expands upon the traditions and canon of the nude in classical and modern European art.[1]

Artist's Statement

"I make pictures which are meant to be direct and truthful.

I do not explain or rationalize this work or my passion for it.

I leave it to the viewer to find the surprises.

I hope the work generates feelings; otherwise I have failed."[2]

Training

Kim learned his craft assisting his father, Cole Weston, in the darkroom making gallery prints from the original negatives of his grandfather, Edward Weston. Kim also worked for many years as an assistant to his uncle, Brett Weston, whose bold, abstract photographs ranked him as the "child genius of American photography".[3]

Medium and Equipment

Kim Weston’s first photographed using a Rolleiflex twin lens reflex (TLR) camera. When Kim reached his twenty’s, his main camera was a large format 4x5 Linhof - a gift from his uncle Brett Weston. He used this camera for many years with the focus shifting from photographing rocks and trees in the traditional Weston style to Nude Figure studies. In his thirties Kim switched to a large format 8x10 Calumet that was given to him by his father Cole. His studio nudes were becoming quite complex. Often telling stories of his life in each series.[4] Kim now photographs with the Mamiya 67 he inherited from his father Cole Weston.[5] Now in his sixties, Kim is mostly working with a medium format Mamiya RB 67. He describes it as his “camera with wings” He loves the format as it can be enlarged to a perfect 16x20. He prints 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20. He still develops his own work, prints in the darkroom and does all of his finishing work himself.[4][5][6]

Lifestyle

Kim Weston lives on Wildcat Hill, the former home of Edward Weston, with his wife Gina where he teaches several photography workshops every year.

In addition, Kim is an educator and a mentor to young photographers having founded the Weston Scholarship Fund (now The Weston Collective) in 2004 to support high school and college students studying fine-art, black and white, film photography in Monterey County.[5]
