Laura Kathryn Wright (born 17 June 1990) is an English soprano. She is a classical-popular crossover singer who performs classical and operatic music, popular songs, musical theatre and folk songs.

Early life

Wright was born in Suffolk, and grew up in Framlingham. She won scholarships to attend the fee-paying Framlingham College along with her three brothers.

Career

Laura first shot to fame as chorister of the year when she was just 14, but now with a first class honours degree from the Royal College of Music and over a million album sales under her belt, Laura Wright has been one of the biggest selling classical artists this decade.

A familiar face at worldwide sporting events, Laura is proud to be the England Rugby team’s first ever official anthem singer, performing at the men’s and women’s rugby matches, all at Twickenham. Laura is also a regular at the NFL matches, has performed at Rugby League, The Carnegie Challenge Cup Final, WSB Boxing, polo, the Carling Cup Final, The Championship Play-off Final and the FA Cup Final. In April 2016 she performed at The Grand National to a rapturous reception and in July she was the official anthem singer at the British Grand Prix.

This year (2016), Laura is also proud to have written “Heroes”; the first official anthem of the England Womens Cricket team. She wrote it specifically for the team who will carry it with them in to the future as their official song. She is also the first Ambassador for the Kia Womens Cricket League.

After a dramatic Red Arrows flypast, Laura was the first to perform at the opening ceremony for HRH Prince Harry’s inaugural Invictus Games where she debuted a new piece she wrote “Invincible”, taken from her album Sound Of Strength. Laura’s show stopping performance resulted in the mezzo-soprano being the talk of the concert, gracing the front page of the Daily Telegraph the following day. Prince Harry asked her to repeat the performance at the second Invictus Games this year in Orlando to a worldwide BBC and ESPN audience.

Laura was the first mezzo soprano to perform at the Olympic Stadium, has toured with Alfie Boe and Russell Watson, opened the iTunes Festival for Andrea Bocelli and duetted with Donny Osmond for Children In Need. She has enjoyed many performances at prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Opera House Wembley Stadium, Wembley Arena, The roof of the o2, Twickenham Stadium, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, even The Great Wall of China and is still only 26 years old.

As a royal favourite, HM The Queen cited Laura’s Diamond Jubilee Song ‘Stronger As One’ in her Commonwealth Day Message at Westminster Abbey where the song was premiered and secured a No1 chart position on Gary Barlow’s Sing EP. Laura enjoyed the privilege of performing more times for Her Majesty than any other artist that year.

An extremely accomplished sports person, Laura has trained to county level in hockey, netball, tennis and javelin. While she now concentrates on her music career, the sporting soprano continues to feed her love of sports with boxing, crossfit, pilates, hockey, playing rugby for Rossyln Park and by raising money for charity in running and cycling events.

It is this combined love of sports and classical music that led to the creation of her album ‘Sound of Strength’, where she fuses her twin passions into a unique sound which emphasises the physical power of music.For the album Laura enlisted renowned sports psychologist from Brunel, Dr Costas Karageorghis to help optimize the sequencing.

Nominated for a Classical Brit Award, Laura went on to receive the PPL Classical Award at the Nordoff Robbins 02 Silver Clef Awards. Alongside Laura’s role as Ambassador at Nordoff Robbins, Laura is also proud to be an Ambassador of Arthritis Research UK, having battled her own debilitating condition at a very young age. She is also an Ambassador for SportsAid, alongside the Duchess of Cambridge and for the Invictus Games, alongside the Royal Patron, HRH Prince Harry.
