Le Grand Secret (The Great Secret / The Immortals) is a miniseries co-produced France - Germany - Spain - Canada directed by Jacques Trébouta on a scenario by André Cayatte based on the eponymous Science fiction novel by René Barjavel (Le Grand secret) and released in 1989 ; starring Claude Rich, Louise Marleau, Peter Sattmann, Claude Jade and Fernando Rey
A grand conspiracy between world leaders in order to hide the existence of a contagious virus which makes humans immortal: The French woman Jeanne Corbet (Louise Marleau) haves a love affair with Roland Fournier (Peter Sattmann), a researcher working in Villejuif on a treatment against cancer. Married to Professor Paul Corbet (Fernando Rey), an older scienitist who tolerates his affair, Jeanne is obsessed with her lover. During his mysterious events controlled by the Secret Service, Roland disappears in burned institute, while simultaneously Jeanne suffered a kidnapping attempt.
Samuel Frend (Claude Rich), an American Secret Agent based in France comes in contact with Jeanne and offers her the opportunity to know that her lover is not dead. Once convinced that Roland is alive, Jeanne will devote her whole life to find him skimming the world in search of tracks in science and espionage. In Caracas she finds Frend and his wife Suzan (Claude Jade), but she lost te couple some days later. And then this little mysterious game could begin to annoy the son of the plot unravel little by little and we understand why this agitation: the discovery by Professor Bahanba (Richard Münch), an Indian scientist working on a treatment against cancer, JL3 an immortality serum stopping aging and eliminating vulnerability to disease in any living being. A few years later it was announced that Samuel Frend died. Jeanne does not believe that Samuel Frend was killed in an accident and visit Suzan Frend, who lives now in Bennington (Vermont), but the "widow" plays a double game. Suzan is an officer of the Secret Service and Jeanne regained Samuel as the "Colonel Bass " on an island called 307, guarded day and night by the army, a community will develop completely self-sufficient around the character of Professor Bahanba playing the role of wise and almost spiritual guide. There, Jeanne now fifty years old now finds Roland who remained spirited young man of thirty. Their love is strongly upset and strangely enough Jeanne is unable to contract symptoms JL3...
Built in 1972 incipient fictitious plot are politicians crossed by heroine Jeanne: Indira Gandhi, Queen Elizabeth II and US President Ronald Reagan. In Barjavels novel in which the search takes 17 years, and begins in 1955, there are among other politicians: Jawaharlal Nehru and John F. Kennedy.
