Leesburg High School is a high school located in Leesburg, Florida and is one of seven public high schools in Lake County, Florida. The school is made up of approximately 1,700 students.[1] The current principal is Dennis Neal. In the 2015-16 academic year, Leesburg High School had many missing student test scores and other administrative inconsistencies. The school also has been featured several news outlets for the intense, violent fights occurring on campus. The school went down in its academic performance rating from a "C" school to a "D" school.
For many previous years, the school was also rated a "D" school by the state of Florida, based upon its FCAT scores. During the 2010-11 school year, the school achieved a "B" grade, but due to a penalty it was reduced to a "C." Bill Miller, the school's former principal, established the motto "Moving On Up" based on the popular song by Ja'net Dubois and Jeff Barry.
Program "495"
In response to the "D" school rating a series of changes occurred that launched Program "495". 495 is the current score on the FCAT that the school needs to pass with a "B". Leesburg High School hasn't gone through many academic changes, one including writing a daily Literacy Log, to see what the student has learned in that class for the day. Another academic change made was to write a P.E.E.L. which is a method of answering a question in explicit detail.
Boys' Basketball
In March 2011 the boys' basketball team won the Class 4A state title by defeating Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale) 66-58. The school previously won the state championship in 1977.[2][3]
