Lerwick Spurs Football Club are a Scottish amateur football club based in Lerwick, capital of the Shetland Islands. They currently compete in the Shetland Football Association's Ocean Kinetics Premier League,[2] Shetland's main football division, and have a reserve team in the Mind Your Head Reserve League[3]
Club History
Spurs were founded after a meeting at a hairdressing salon in Lerwick where chief officials Sandy Wright, Willie Tait, Leslie Eunson and first team coach Reverend Harold Stanaway formed the new Lerwick Club.
Spurs were the town's fifth club and after two friendlies played their first competitive match beating Whitedale 8 - 1 with hat tricks from Alex Nicolson and Sammy Johnson.[4]
Success
Lerwick Spurs became the Shetland senior football champions for the first time since 1991 by winning what was then the G&S Flooring Premier League in 2012. They defeated Ness United 4-0 in the final match of the outdoor season, played at Harbison Park in Whalsay. Jordan Webb gave Spurs the lead from the penalty spot in the first half after Ness keeper Erik Peterson had upended striker Connel Gresham in the box and received a yellow card. The other three goals all came in the second half, courtesy of Scott Morrison, James Johnston and Connel Gresham.
In September 2014, Spurs again secured the Premier League title for a third consecutive season, with a 2-0 win over Delting. Goals came from Connel Gresham and Paul Molloy.[5]
Sponsors
Spurs are currently sponsored by haulage firm Shetland Transport.[6] Their kits are provided by Adidas.
