The following is a list of the Greek organizations at San Jose State University:

Fraternities

Interfraternity Council

Alpha Sigma Phi & Pi Kappa Phi are currently fraternities with no existing houses, and it is believed that they are both colonizing and/or expanding their chapter. Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Kappa Tau are currently unrecognized by San José State; please be very cautious when approaching these fraternities and those that are not on the list.

Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEΠ)

Also known as AEPi, Alpha Epsilon Pi is a Jewish fraternity that was founded at New York University in 1913. SJSU officially welcomed the Chi Psi chapter on August 5, 2013. Although there is a religious emphasis in the brotherhood, all prospective brothers from any background are welcome to rush and attempt to join. AEΠ XΨ hosts the events of "Pie in the Face" and "Rocking for Ta-tas." As of 2014, despite being the smallest Interfraternity Council organization at San José State with approximately 18 brothers,[1] AEPi is determined to expand their brotherhood; AEPi has doubled their numbers in the last three years.[2]

Alpha Tau Omega (ΑΤΩ)

Also known as ATO, Alpha Tau Omega is a fraternity that was founded at the Virginia Military Institute in 1865. SJSU officially welcomed the Epsilon Chi chapter on October 28, 1950. The group was founded as Delta Theta Omega in the year of 1926, and it is the first local fraternity founded at San José State University.[3] Alpha Tau Omega is the only Interfraternity Council organization that received the "Gold laurel" award for 2016 by receiving nearly all points, making it the most prestigious overall fraternity in IFC by achieving beyond expectations. It is the best fraternity out of all of the recognized fraternities in existence at SJSU in that time as well. ATΩ EX hosts a wide variety of events, most recently "Pedaling for Packard" on November 2016 in order to raise money for Lucille Packard Children's hospital.

Beta Theta Pi (ΒΘΠ)

Also known as Beta, Beta Theta Pi is a fraternity that was founded at Miami University in 1839. SJSU officially welcomed the Zeta Eta chapter on March 11, 1995. Beta Theta Pi is a diverse fraternity, with over five countries represented in the Greek organization.[2] Beta received the "Bronze laurel" award for 2016, which is an award that recognizes a Greek organization for doing what is expected from academics to leadership.[4] It is the only Interfraternity Council Greek organization that is isolated from Greek Row. ΒΘΠ ZH is an intimate fraternity, with around 31 brothers as of 2014 in comparison to the large, 80+ brothers IFC Greek organizations, excluding AEPi. ΒΘΠ ZH hosts events such as "Leadership College" and "Future's Quest."

Delta Sigma Phi (ΔΣΦ)

Also known as DSP, Delta Sigma Phi is a fraternity that was founded at the City College of New York in 1899. SJSU officially welcomed the Gamma Epsilon chapter on June 19, 1949. DSP received the "Emerging Leader of the Year" award in 2015 to represent for the 2016 year. DSP also received the "Silver laurel" award, where one fraternity exceeded expectations by receiving most of the points.[5] ΔΣΦ ΓE conducts many known events such as the "Alumni Homecoming Football Tailgate." Recently, DSP hosted Spartan's Best Dance Crew, a famous dance competition in November 2016 that attracted many people to either watch or compete. The main purpose of SBDC is to raise money for children with a cleft who do not have the money for surgeries.

Delta Upsilon (ΔΥ)

Also known as DU, Delta Upsilon is a fraternity that was founded at Williams College in 1834. SJSU officially welcomed the San José chapter on November 14, 1948. DU also received the "Silver laurel" award where they went beyond expectations by receiving most points for 2016. DU is also the best fraternity in the Interfraternity Council at SJSU based on how much they improved within a year.[6] ΔΥ San José renovated their house in 2007, which is highly looked upon from the San José State community due to their large, tall columns and the mansion-like architecture.[2]

Kappa Sigma (KΣ)

Also known as Kappa Sig, Kappa Sigma is a fraternity that was founded at the University of Virginia in 1869. SJSU officially welcomed the Theta Iota chapter on April 24, 1965. Kappa Sig specifically focuses on scholarship, leadership, fellowship and service. KΣ ΘI also maintains events, notably speaking the "Beauty Bowl" and the "Powderpuff Football Fundraiser" that takes place in each spring.[7]

Pi Kappa Alpha (ΠΚΑ)

Also known as Pike, Pi Kappa Alpha is a fraternity that was founded at the University of Virginia in 1868. SJSU officially welcomed the Delta Pi chapter on March 3, 1950. Pike emphasizes the values of vision, mission, and creed by discussing in their rituals. Pike strives to become the best fraternity at SJSU by valuing morality, and often competes yet collaborates with other chapters within Pike. ΠΚΑ ΔΠ has won several excellence awards at the national level.[8]

Sigma Alpha Epsilon (ΣAE)

Also known as SAE, Sigma Alpha Epsilon is a fraternity that was founded at the University of Alabama in 1856. SJSU officially welcomed the California Zeta chapter on November 1, 1947. SAE raises money for charity as well as philanthropy through service.[2] SAE is unique in recruiting since it does so throughout the year instead of by semester. Also, no trial is needed to join the fraternity due to the context of SAE; SAE will evaluate individuals who rushed the fraternity immediately. ΣAE CalfiorniaZ maintains some events such as "Paddy Murhpy" and "SAE Founders Day."[9]

Sigma Chi (ΣX)

Also known as Sig Chi, Sigma Chi is a fraternity that was founded at Miami University in 1855. SJSU officially welcomed the Epsilon Theta chapter on March 1, 1952. Sig Chi received the "Silver laurel award" in recognition of exceeding expectations by getting most points.[10] Sig Chi follows the national values of friendship, justice, and learning through the brotherhood and community of SJSU. Sig Chi is primarily known for their philanthropy, specifically for the Children's Miracle Network and Huntsman Cancer Institute. ΣX ΕΘ hosts many events throughout the year, including "Derby Days" and the "Balfour Leadership Training Workshop."

Sigma Nu (ΣN)

Also known as Sig Nu, Sigma Nu is a fraternity that was founded at the Virginia Military Institute in 1869. SJSU officially welcomed the Zeta Iota chapter on May 19, 1951. Sig Nu obtained the "Silver laurel award" which is known for one chapter exceeding expectations on what a fraternity should do from academics to service. Sig Nu practices the values of Love, Truth, and Honor through their non-hazing practices. Recently, Sig Nu also renovated their house, with an expansion of facilities such as bathrooms and a study room.[11] ΣN ZI hosts many known events each year for their philanthropy, including the "White Rose Queen Pageant."

Theta Chi (ΘX)

Also known as Theta, Theta Chi is a fraternity that was founded at Norwich University in 1856. SJSU officially welcomed the Gamma Xi chapter on May 15, 1948. Theta is the longest active running fraternity at San José State.[2] ΘX ΓΞ hosts events such as "Kicks for Kids Kickball" and the "Alumni Homecoming Tailgate."

Sororities

Alpha Omicron Pi (AOΠ)

Also known as AOPi, Alpha Omicron Pi is a sorority that was founded at Columbia University in 1897. SJSU officially welcomed the Delta Sigma chapter on March 14th, 1948. AOPi received the "Bronze laurel" award, which is recognizing chapters for meeting expected guidelines on what a Greek organization should do. One of their events consist of a pageant on determining who is the best male and female in the Greek system for AOPi; the pageant has raised over approximately $100,000 since 1988. [12] In addition, AOΠ ΔΣ hosts many other events such as "Senior Roast" and "All-Bay Area Founders' Day."

Alpha Phi (AΦ)

Also known as "A-Phi", Alpha Phi is a sorority that was founded at Syracuse University in 1872. SJSU officially welcomed the Beta Psi chapter on March 6th, 1948. A-Phi earned the "Bronze laurel" award by achieving enough points to meet SJSU's expectations on a Greek organization. A-Phi's philanthropy aims to raise money primarily for the Alpha Phi Foundation, as well as other organizations that positively impact the world. AΦ BΨ has events such as the "King of Hearts" and "Red Dress Gala." [13]

Alpha Xi Delta (AΞΔ)

Also known as AXiD, Alpha Xi Delta is a sorority that was founded at Lombard College - an institution that does not exist anymore - in 1893. SJSU officially welcomed the Iota Omicron chapter on January 24th, 2010. AXiD received the "Gold laurel" award, which is a prestigious distinction given to a chapter that received nearly all points by going above beyond on what a Greek organization should do. In addition, AXiD is officially the best Greek organization in the Panhellenic Council for the 2016-17 school year. ΑΞΔ IO manages events such as the "Amaxing Challenge" and "Xi Man & Xi Woman."

Delta Gamma (ΔΓ)

Also known as DG, Delta Gamma is a sorority that was founded at the University of Mississippi - specifically at the Lewis School for Girls - in 1873. SJSU officially welcomed the Gamma Eta chapter on February 7th, 1948. DG received the "Silver laurel" award, which is known for a Greek organization exceeding expectation by meeting most points. DG is an academically gifted sorority, through their awards from GPA recognitions and chapter awards from the school to national level. [14] In addition, DG receives positive feedback from the SJSU community about their house, from the size to the iconic anchor that is on the corner of their house. ΔΓ ΓH is primarily known at SJSU from their event called "Anchor Splash."

Delta Zeta (ΔZ)

Also known as DZ, Delta Zeta is a sorority that was founded at Miami University in 1902. SJSU officially welcomed the Gamma Lambda chapter on February 28th, 1948. DZ received the "Silver laurel" award, an award given to chapters by meeting most desired guidelines for Greek organizations. DZ is heavy on philanthropy from them benefiting the Painted Turtle Camp (via Turtle Bowl) and the American Cancer Society. ΔZ ΓΛ hosts many known events such as "New Member Dance" and "Parent's Day." [15]

Kappa Delta (KΔ)

Also known as "KD", Kappa Delta is a sorority that was founded at Longwood University in 1897. SJSU officially welcomed the Gamma Iota chapter on February 4th, 1956. KD received the "Gold laurel" award, which is the highest distinction any Greek organization has received at SJSU for the 2016-17 year by receiving nearly all points. KD is also the best overall improved chapter out of all of the Panhellenic Council Greek organizations. [16] KΔ ΓI is known for their events such as "Shamrock Showcase" and "International Girls Day" where they primarily benefit Prevent Child Abuse America and Child Quest International.
