Olivia "Liv" Boeree (born 18 July 1984) is a poker player, TV presenter and model from England who won the 2010 European Poker Tour in Sanremo. Born in Kent, Boeree studied at Ashford School before going on to earn a First Class Honours degree in Physics with Astrophysics at the University of Manchester. She was the #1 ranked female player on the Global Poker Index as of November 2015, and #6 on the female all-time live poker winnings list.
Early Career: Model and Musician
Boeree was a keen guitar player[1] in her early twenties, specialising in the heavy metal genre. In University she played lead guitar in the band Dissonance, and in 2006 she briefly featured as lead guitarist for rock/goth band Nemhain before starting her career in poker.
Boeree also modelled in her early twenties for rock and alternative lifestyle features. She later modelled for some mainstream magazines, including a three-page feature in the November 2008 issue of Loaded Magazine, and had an online feature and photoshoot for Maxim UK.
Poker career
Boeree was introduced to the poker industry when she was selected as one of five contestants for the reality TV show Ultimatepoker.com Showdown, which aired on Five in autumn 2005. During the show she was coached by top poker players Phil Hellmuth, Annie Duke and Dave Ulliott.
After the show Boeree began playing poker regularly at the Gutshot Club in London, and from there became an on-screen reporter for Gutshot TV at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. Soon after she became the host of Challenge TV's on-line coverage of the European Poker Tour, also appearing as a reporter for the World Series of Poker Europe on WorldSeriesofPoker.com.
In May 2008 she won the 2008 Ladbrokes European Ladies Championships for $30,000.[2] Boeree has accumulated a total of twelve World Series of Poker cashes to date, including finishing 18th in the 2012 World Series of Poker Europe for €26,611.
On 21 April 2010, Boeree won the European Poker Tour main event in Sanremo, at the time the largest ever poker tournament held on European soil. Boeree won €1,250,000 and thereby became the third woman ever to win an EPT title.[3][4]
She has shown continuous success on the EPT circuit with twelve Main Event cashes to date. Other notable results include a 2nd place in the 2014 UKIPT Edinburgh Main Event a 3rd place in the EPT Barcelona High Roller event for €391,000 in August 2015.
Awards: Boeree won Female Player of the Year in both 2014[5] and 2015[6] at the European Poker Awards, as determined by Global Poker Index points she accumulated during those years. She was also awarded "Europe's Leading Lady" in 2010 at the European Poker Awards.
Boeree has been a member of Team PokerStars Pro since September 2010.[7] Her total live tournament winnings exceed $3,000,000.[2]
In February 2016 she was announced as the Team Manager of the Global Poker League team "The London Royals".[8]
Charity Work
In 2014, Boeree co-founded Raising for Effective Giving, an organization that educates poker players about Effective altruism, and fundraises for specifically selected highly effective charities.[9][10]
As of May 2016 Raising for Effective Giving has raised over $1,000,000 for its supported charities.[11]
Television
Boeree's episode of the documentary series "Life of Cards" aired worldwide on Insight TV in September 2016.
Boeree co-hosted the Discovery Channel show "Mind Control Freaks" alongside Alexis Conran, Lewis Le Val and Pete Wardell, airing 2014.
She is also known for multiple Reality TV appearances, her most recent being the co-star alongside poker player Kevin MacPhee of the Travel Channel show "I Bet My Life", aired across the USA on 4 November 2012.
She is the former co-host of the UK and Ireland Poker Tour, a weekly show that aired on Channel 4 in the UK.
On 29 September 2010 she appeared on BBC Breakfast alongside Boris Becker, and in May 2010 she was interviewed on ITV's GMTV by Lorraine Kelly about her European Poker Tour win.
In 2006 she appeared on the Channel 4 show Codex.
On 21 July 2007 Boeree appeared on the ITV show Golden Balls, winning £6,500.50.
In 2011 Boeree was a member of the Celebrity Graduate Manchester University team that took part in BBC2's seasonal general knowledge tournament, Celebrity Christmas University Challenge.[12]
Speaker
Boeree was a speaker at the Effective Altruism Global Summit held at Google HQ in San Francisco in August 2015. Her topic centered on how to create fundraising organisations for effective causes within specific industries. The event also featured talks from Elon Musk and philosopher Nick Bostrom.[13]
In May 2016 she spoke at Oxford University Union about poker analysis techniques, effective altruism and her life in the poker industry.
In November 2015 she spoke at the Web Summit technology conference in Dublin about her life as a poker player and the technological developments within the poker industry.[14]
