Logan H. Roots

Logan Holt Roots (March 26, 1841 – May 30, 1893) was a U.S. Representative from Arkansas.

Biography

Born near Tamaroa in Perry County in southern Illinois, Roots completed preparatory studies and graduated in 1862 from Illinois State Normal University. Roots assisted in recruiting the Eighty-first Illinois Volunteers and served in the Union Army until the close of the American Civil War. Commissioned a First Lieutenant, by the time of his discharge in 1865 Roots was breveted a Lieutenant Colonel. He settled in Arkansas and engaged in planting and trading.

Upon the readmission of Arkansas to the Union, Roots was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress. He was reelected to the Forty-first Congress and served from June 22, 1868, to March 3, 1871. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1870 to the Forty-second Congress. Roots was appointed U.S. Marshal for the United States Court of the Western District of Arkansas. Political scandal led to his removal the following year..

Roots served as the first president of the Arkansas Bankers Association in 1891 . He served as president of the First National Bank of Little Rock, until his death in that city on May 30, 1893. He was interred there at Oakland Cemetery.
