Loyola Pre-University College, Manvi was founded by the Jesuits in 2010 to complement the secondary school education of Xavier School, Manvi, which is on the same campus.
History
St, Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1540 and expressed as its vision to work for the greater glory of God (AMDG). The education of youth quickly became a major part of its work, and since the Second Vatican Council in the Catholic church an important objective of Jesuit educational work is to educate youth to be men and women for others.[1]
In Northern Karnataka this has fleshed out to conscientizing to their human dignity the exploited – mainly dalits and adivasis – and working for their socio-economic betterment through education. Xavier Manvi enrolls over 1,370 students at the primary and high school levels, most of them bringing first generation literacy to their families who are engrossed in farm labour or cattle grazing jobs. Loyola Pre-University College was opened in 2010 to extend education beyond the tenth standard, with special focus on girls because of their perceived impact on the education of children.[2]
In 2015 Loyola began offering degree courses, beyond 6th form. A formal inauguration took place 17th January 2015, with the Diocesan Bishop, a former Home Minister, and over 3000 people from far and wide, to give tribute to this effort at degree education for the Dalits, who graced the ceremony with their traditional dance.[3]
Courses offered
Pre-university or "6th form" courses are offered in science with emphases in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biology; in arts with emphases in history, economics, political science, and sociology; in commerce with emphases in history, economics, business studies, accountancy, and computer science.[4]
Programs complementary to the coursework aim at educating the whole person. These include Social Analysis, Mother's Day, Sauharda, Huttu Habba (Birthday celebration of our students), the annual play Media Analysis, Youth Training skills programme, and Theatre Workshop.[5]
