Lady Herbert Montagu Douglas Scott
Marie Josephine Agnes Edwards (19 December 1882 – 15 February 1965) was the daughter of James Andrew Edwards and Kate Marion Agnes MacNamara.
Through her marriage to Lieutenant-Colonel Lord Herbert Andrew Montagu Douglas Scott, Marie became a paternal aunt to HRH Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, and thereby a maternal grandaunt to HRH Prince William of Gloucester and HRH Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester. She was the paternal great-grandmother of Sarah, Duchess of York, and the maternal second great-grandmother of HRH Princess Beatrice of York and HRH Princess Eugenie of York.
Early Life, Marriage, & Family
Marie Josephine Agnes Edwards was born at Dovercourt, Essex on Tuesday, 19 December 1882, to James Andrew Edwards and his wife, Kate Marion Agnes MacNamara. According to a Herald (Scotland) obituary for her daughter Patricia Dundee, she was a niece of the music director and theatre manager George Edwardes (1855-1915).
On Wednesday, 26 April 1905 at St. George's, Hanover Square at the age of 22, she married Lieutenant-Colonel Lord Herbert Andrew Montagu Douglas Scott, son of Sir William Henry Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, 6th Duke of Buccleuch & 8th Duke of Queensberry and Lady Louisa Jane Hamilton, VA, Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria, and third daughter of the 1st Duke of Abercorn.[1] The couple had three children:
- Colonel Claud Andrew Montagu Douglas Scott (13 July 1906 - 24 January 1971)
- Marian Louisa Montagu Douglas Scott (16 June 1908 - 11 December 1996)
- Patricia Katherine Montagu Douglas Scott (9 October 1910 - 3 December 2012),[2] thrice married, lastly to her late second husband's older brother, the 11th Earl of Dundee, and is mother of the present Earl and several other children.
Death
Lady Herbert Montagu Douglas Scott died on Monday, 15 February 1965, at Chelsea, London, at the age of 82. At the time of her death, she was survived by all three of her children, nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by one grandchild, John Andrew Ferguson (21 January 1929 - 1939), who died at the age of 10 with peritonitis.
