Maryellen O'Shaughnessy is a Democratic politician from Columbus, Ohio. She was the unsuccessful party nominee for Ohio's 12th congressional district in 2000 and for Ohio Secretary of State in 2010.
Background
O'Shaughnessy is a fifth-generation Central Ohioan.[1][2] She graduated from Bishop Watterson High School and received a B.A. from The Ohio State University in Journalism.[2]
O'Shaughnessy is a fourth-generation funeral director and owner of the O'Shaughnessy Company Funeral Directors, established in 1889.[2] She lost to Pat Tiberi in 2000 for Ohio's 12th congressional district.[3] She was elected to three terms on the Columbus City Council before being elected to Franklin County Clerk of Courts in 2008.[1]
In 2010, O'Shaughnessy was the Democratic Party nominee for Ohio Secretary of State. She was opposed by Republican Jon A. Husted, then a member of the Ohio State Senate, and previously Speaker of the Ohio House, and Libertarian Charles Earl. Husted won election with 53.7% to O'Shaughnessy's 41.5% and Earl's 4.8%.[4]
O'Shaughnessy ran unopposed for a second four-year term as Clerk of Courts in 2012. Her present term ends January, 2017.[2]
Personal
O'Shaughnessy lives in the Flytown neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. She is a member of the Roman Catholic Church, and has received the Diocesan Service Award. She is on the boards of the Columbus Historical Society and the Greenways Working Group of the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, the metropolitan planning organization for central Ohio.[2]
