Matthew Neil William Spriegel is an English cricketer who has played for Loughborough UCCE and Surrey and is currently with Northamptonshire. He was educated at Whitgift School before attending Loughborough University. He is a left-handed batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler.
He made his first-class debut for Loughborough against Somerset on 14 April 2007. He played six first-class matches for them, three in 2007 and three in 2008, all of them as captain.
He first played for the Surrey first team in a List A fixture in the Friends Provident Trophy against Essex on 25 May 2008. He made his Surrey first-class debut in the County Championship game against Somerset at Croydon on 30 May 2008.
He made his maiden first class hundred in the final match of the 2009 season against Glamorgan at The Oval.
Rumours began to surface in early September 2012 that Northamptonshire were attempting to secure Spriegel's signature for the 2013 season. On 7 September, these rumours were confirmed and Spriegel's departure was announced, despite a concerted, if somewhat lighthearted, social media campaign to keep him at The Oval.
Spriegel was part of the Northants team that won the Friends Life T20 in 2013, playing in all of the team's matches. His departure from Northants was announced late in the 2014 season, albeit with little of the fanfare surrounding his release from Surrey. Shortly afterwards he announced his retirement from professional cricket.[1]
