Medical surgical nursing certification

Medical-surgical nurses who meet eligibility requirements and pass a multiple choice exam become certified.

Medical-surgical nursing certification (and recertification) is offered by two organizations in the US:

• The Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB), a partner of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) an organization that exists to establish credentialing mechanisms for validating proficiency in medical-surgical nursing

MSNCB was founded by the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN), a specialty nursing organization for medical-surgical nurses. MSNCB partners with AMSN to provide an array of programs and services for professional development. The earned credential is Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN).

• The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association.

ANCC, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA), provides individuals and organizations throughout the nursing profession with the resources they need to achieve practice excellence. The earned credential is Registered Nurse-Board Certified (RN-BC).
