Merida's City Museum

The Museum of the City is located near of Mérida city and is home to a large amount of evidence of the development of the city, turning it into an important emblem that reaffirms the identity of the city. Even the building in which it finds this museum is historical, since it dates of the period of the porfiriato although in that then was the Federal Palace of Posts.[1]

Antecedents

The current headquarters of the museum of the city constitutes an element of big importance for Mérida not only by his architectural style that stands out from the surrounding buildings, but for their historical value. This Federal Palace was inaugurated to finals of the porfiriato on 5 May 1908 under the Mandate of the governor Enrique Muñoz Arístegui and inside this established offices of telegraphs, posts and courts. Designed and built by the Military Engineer Salvador Echegaray, distinguishes by his style neoclásic with true touch of the French style giving him touch modern in the finishings of the flat, of the walls and aluminum works. In honour to the history of the building, inside the museum of exhibit representative objects that marked the period in that it served like postal service.[2]

Rooms of exhibitions

In the museum find in exhibition around 150 pieces of permanent form that go from pieces of big historical value until archaeologic pieces. All these pieces are distributed in four main rooms.[3]

Prehispanic Merida

It contains a lot of pieces that there was in the ancient Merida of the previous period to the conquest of the Spaniards. Even it houses pieces that date of the culture Maya.

The colony or Novohispanic Merida

This is the room in which they begin to present objects that trace back to the period of the Merida's foundation as well as objects of the daily life of the period, armament and other pieces that show to Mérida during the Colony.

Merida in the 19th century and principles of the XX

In this room find us with artilugios that speak us on the development of the city and his economic growth. Other pieces referents to the period of the inland revenues, education and political of this time.

20th century

In this room show objects of the current life of Merida referents not only to the culture, if no to the architecture and sports and stressing even more the traditions of the city.

Temporary rooms

The temporary exhibitions generally take place in the first flat of the Museum of the City. In these present the tendencies referents to the visual arts, through different media like the painting, drawing, recorded, photography, sculpture and video. Also they can make thematic exhibitions that show more on the history of Merida.
