Michael Pelech (born October 6, 1989) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player for the Reading Royals in the ECHL. Pelech was a draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings selected in the 6th round (156th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Playing career
Pelech played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Kitchener Rangers, Toronto St. Michael's Majors and Mississauga St. Michael's Majors. In 2009 he was assigned to the Ontario Reign (ECHL team to the Los Angeles Kings) where he played until 2011, also playing five games for the Manchester Monarchs (AHL team to the Los Angeles Kings) in 2010. In 2011 Pelech briefly played on the Toledo Walleye before being traded to the Cincinnati Cyclones where he played for two full seasons as the Assistant Captain. During his time with the team, Pelech was called up to a number of AHL teams including the Norfolk Admirals, Worcester Sharks, Connecticut Whale and the Peoria Riverman. Pelech started off the 2013-14 season playing on the Cincinnati Cyclones and was traded to the Utah Grizzlies alongside Cyclones captain Mathieu Aubin, playing as a Center.
On August 7, 2014, Pelech agreed to re-sign for a second season with the Utah Grizzlies.[1] In the 2014–15 season, Pelech was leaned upon with Grizzlies for offense, producing 59 points in 56 games. He was loaned in a return to the AHL to the Rochester Americans featuring in 10 games for 4 points.
On August 17, 2015, Pelech left the Grizzlies as a free agent to sign a one-year contract with new ECHL entrant the Norfolk Admirals.[2]
Personal
His older brother, Matt Pelech was selected 26th overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, and currently plays in their organization. His younger brother, Adam currently plays for the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League and was selected 65th overall by the New York Islanders in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Matt, Michael and Adam are nephews of Mike Gillis, the former General Manager for the Vancouver Canucks.
