Michael "Mike" Phelan is one of three deputy commissioners of the Australian Federal Police.[1] He is the deputy commissioner responsible for national security. He served as the Chief Police Officer of the Australian Capital Territory Police (ACTP).[2] The ACTP is a police unit under the Australian Federal Police.

Career
Phelan commenced his career with the Australian Federal Police in 1985.[3] Subsequent to being promoted to the rank of commander in 2002, he became assistant commissioner in 2004.[3] He was appointed to his current position in September 2007 at the age of 44.[3] In March 2010, Phelan was succeeded as Chief Police Officer of the ACT Police by Roman Quaedvlieg.[4]
During his time with the AFP, Phelan was responsible for international operations and border security in relations to narcotics and people smuggling in 2005.[5] This role led to the investigation of the Bali Nine.[5] He and the AFP Commissioner Colvin made statements about the case on 4 May 2015 after the execution of the ringleaders of the Bali nine[1]
