Middlesbrough Milk Rollers are an all-female flat track roller derby league and not-for-profit organisation based in Middlesbrough, England.[1]
Founded in September 2007, the Milk Rollers are the first league in the North East.[2]
The Middlesbrough Milk Rollers play by the rules of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. They are members of the UK Roller Derby Association.
History
Formed in September 2007, The Middlesbrough Milk Rollers hosted the North East's first roller derby EXPO Northern Exposure[3] on 19 September 2009 which featured 4 leagues from the UK competing.[4]
As well as taking part in boot camps, bouts and guest skating for other leagues, MMR competed in the London Rollergirls hosted European tournament "Roll Britannia" in 2009 as part of the mixed team 'Royal Rebel Rollers'.[5]
The league take an active role in getting women and men in Teesside involved in roller derby and have organised and hosted fundraisers and events including running a pop-up shop as part of the 'We Are Open' project.[6]
The league has now grown to 30 + members, including female skaters and male and female referees, NSOs and volunteers.
In February 2012 the team received a lottery funded Sports England grant making them the first derby league in the UK to receive one.
2012 has been a very successful year for the Milk Rollers; being their busiest season to date, winning numerous bouts and taking first place in the Great Yorkshire Showdown tournament in July.
The league put forward their first ever B Team in a Closed bout against established team the Norfolk Brawds at the beginning of September, their first open bout being against the Newcastle Roller Girls Whippin Hinnies on 22 September.
2013 is looking to be even better as the Milk Rollers are currently planning ahead for their Bouting season for both teams in the league.
In April 2013, Middlesbrough was accepted as a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association Apprentice Program.[7]
