Datuk Seri Datuk Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria (born in 1966) is a public figure in Malaysia and he was conferred the award of ‘Darjah Kebesaran Seri Mahkota Wilayah (SMW)’ which carries the title of ‘Datuk Seri’ by HRH King of Malaysia (Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong Almu’tasimu Billahi Muhibbuddin Tuanku AlHaj Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Ibni AlMarhum Sultan Badlishah) in conjunction with Federal Territory Day on 1 February 2015.[1]
Datuk Seri Norza is currently the Deputy-President of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and the President of the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Association (KLBA),[2][3] which has propelled Malaysia to the world stage of badminton, having produced Olympic and World-Class Champions such as Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong.
Elected in August 2015 as the Deputy President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), Datuk Seri Norza was also appointed by the OCM as the chef-de-mission (CDM) of Malaysia for the 28th SEA Games, Singapore 2015 which was held from 5–16 June 2015.
Datuk Seri Norza is also the Chairman of the National Sports Institute (Institut Sukan Negara),[4] Treasurer for the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), Exco Member for the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) and Council Member for the Federal Territories Sports Council (MSWP).
With his passion and enthusiasm for the game of Polo, Datuk Seri Norza is also the President of the Putra Polo Club.
Early Life & Educational Background
Datuk Seri Norza is the son of schoolteachers and was born in Malacca and grew up in Negeri Sembilan. After his studies in Sekolah Tuanku Jaafar in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, he received his Higher School of Certificate from the Randwick Boys High School in Australia in 1985.
A Chartered Accountant (CA) from the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) by profession, Datuk Seri Norza studied and received his Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of Wollongong in Australia from 1986 to 1988.
In 2008, Datuk Seri Norza qualified as a Fellow of CPA Australia (FCPA) from CPA Australia Ltd.
Professional Background
As a Chartered Accountant, Datuk Seri Norza started his career with Arthur Andersen & Co, and held managerial, executive and high level positions with Bank Negara Malaysia, Petronas, SPK Sentosa, Mun Loong Berhad and Gabungan Strategik Sdn Bhd.
Datuk Seri Norza sits on several boards of high-profile publicly listed corporations (PLC) in Malaysia and is the Group President & CEO of Citaglobal Sdn Bhd, a company he started in 2008 that has a wide diversity of business holdings from oil and gas, hospitality, transportation and media technology.
Datuk Seri Norza currently sits on the Board of Directors of four government linked PLC, namely Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad,[5] TH Heavy Engineering Berhad TH Plantations Berhad[6] and Pelikan International Corporation Berhad.
Besides being the Audit Committee Chairman of Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad, TH Heavy Engineering Berhad and TH Plantations Berhad, he also sits as a board member in the subsiaries/associates of the said companies, namely, THHE Fabricators Sdn Bhd, Berlian McDermott Sdn Bhd, Samalaju Industrial Port Sdn Bhd[7] and THP Saribas Sdn Bhd.
Previously, he has also held similar positions with Lembaga Urusan Tabung Haji, Institut Terjemahan Negara Malaysia and PT XL Axiata Tbk (formerly known as PT Excelcomindo Pratama Tbk).
Political Background
Datuk Seri Norza began an active involvement in politics beginning with the student movement and NGOs during his studies at the University of Wollonggong. In 1986, he was a General Representative of the University of Wollonggong.
In 1992, having been identified as possessing excellent leadership, intelligence, communication and organizational skills, Datuk Seri Norza began his involvement with the premier political ruling party of Malaysia; UMNO
Datuk Seri Norza was the former UMNO Youth Chief Federal Territory and the youngest ever member of the UMNO Supreme Council (MT) (from 2004 to 2008) which oversees policy-making for the government of the country.
In 2004, Datuk Seri Norza held his first political appointment as the Political Secretary to the Minister of Finance II in the Ministry of Finance of Malaysia. He was appointed to the Supreme Council of UMNO and played an important role in establishing UMNO policies and procedures.
In 2009, Datuk Seri Norza was erroneously charged on two (2) counts of money politics (one amounting to USD 454 and the other USD 570) [8] and despite attempts to find him guilty, the case was withdrawn before the conclusion of the trial and his innocence was proven beyond doubt.[9]
Many believe that these charges were a conspiracy and were instigated and brought on by Datuk Seri Norza's political enemies because of his immense popularity as a grassroots leader.
On 17 June 2013, at a press conference in Cheras,[9] Secretary of Federal Territories UMNO Liaison Body, YBhg. Datuk Seri Syed Ali Alhabshee publicly announced [10] that Datuk Seri Norza's rights as an UMNO member had been fully reinstated and was fully exonerated.
