Nanto (南砺市 Nanto-shi) is a city located in Toyama Prefecture, Japan.

As of May 31, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 55,315, with 17,386 households and a population density of 82.70 persons per km². The total area is 668.86 km².

The modern city of Nanto was established on November 1, 2004, from the merger of the towns of Fukuno, Inami and Jōhana, the villages of Inokuchi, Kamitaira, Taira and Toga (all from Higashitonami District), and the town of Fukumitsu (from Nishitonami District).

The city takes its name from its relative location to the neighboring city Tonami, the south—"nan" (南) in Japanese—and the first syllable of the neighboring city's name—"to" (砺).

Geography

Geographically, the city contains numerous rivers, valleys, mountains and lakes, as well as abundant level ground for rice paddies.

Media

The animation company P.A.Works is headquartered in the city, and often includes references of its location to its titles, such as the 2013 series Koitabi: True Tours Nanto, which was set in Nanto and shows scenes from Nanto and the surrounding area, and their 2016 anime Kuromukuro, which is based around the whole Toyama prefecture, including Nanto.

Sister City

Nanto is a sister city of Marlboro, NJ - established in 1991.
