New Cairo (Arabic: zالقاهرة الجديدة‎‎ El Qāhera El Gedīda) is a city covering an area of about 30,000 hectares (70,000 acres) on the southeastern edge of Cairo Governorate, 15 miles from Maadi.[1] New Cairo is one of the new cities, which have been built, in and around Cairo to alleviate the congestion in downtown Cairo. It was established in the year 2000 by presidential decree number 191.[2]

Located in what was formerly Helwan,[3] and located between affluent Maadi and Heliopolis,[4] New Cairo ranges in elevation between 250 and 307 metres (820 and 1,007 ft) above sea level.[5]

The city could eventually host a population of 5 million.[6] When compared to 6th of October, also built with the hopes of alleviating the strain on Cairo, more homes are being rented out in New Cairo than in 6th of October.[7]

History

On April 27, 2016 President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi inaugurated the new headquarters of the Ministry of Interior in New Cairo. The complex covers about 20,000 square miles (52,000 km2).[8]

Geography

Of particular significance to geologists is the Petrified Forest Protected Area, located in the vicinity of New Cairo. It is a protected site.[9]

Weather

Because of its elevation and the fact that it is not as congested as Cairo, New Cairo enjoys much cooler weather,[10] approximately 5 degrees Celsius cooler than Cairo.[11][12]

Economy and utilities

There are dozens of factories in New Cairo.[13] Google Egypt has it's headquarters in New Cairo.[14] GE is working with the American University in New Cairo on energy initiatives.[15] El Sewedy Electric has it's headquarters in the Fifth Settlement of New Cairo.[16]

The city is connected to other cities by a vast network of bus lines, and taxis but it does not have a metro system.[17] The city gets it's drinking water from a water plant in Obour City, nearby.[18]

A championship golf course with tennis facilities lies in the Katameya section of New Cairo.[19]

At the entrance of New Cairo is Cairo Festival City, a 700 acres real estate development. It has parks, pools, gardens, walkways, business office space, a large mall and a dancing fountain.[20]

Religion

There are several mosques in New Cairo, such as New Merryland Mosque[21] but no Coptic churches. In September, 2016, the president approved the building of a new Coptic Orthodox church in New Cairo.[22]
