#NiUnaMenos (Spanish: Not one less) are demonstrations that took place in Argentina on June 3, 2015 and October 19, 2016 [1] They are protests against femicides in the country.
Context
There are no official statistics in Argentina about femicides. However, a number of non-governmental organizations estimate an average of one death per 30 hours, based on reports seen in the media. The crimes initially took place in homes, but have extended to public places as well. The demonstration was called with the hashtag "#NiUnaMenos".[2]
Several journalists, intellectuals and activists explained the problems during the previous three weeks. The current law against gender violence in Argentina is not implemented, as there is no budget, criminal register, or specially trained security forces. The law has 45 articles, of which eleven are partially implemented and only eight are fully implemented.[3] Several television personalities supported the demonstration as well, showing cards with the "#NiUnaMenos" hashtag.[2]
Protest
The protest took place at the Congressional Plaza, in Buenos Aires, on June 3, 2015. It was attended by nearly 300,000 people, backed by women's rights groups, unions, political organizations and the Catholic Church.[4] The demonstration was set to start at 17:00, but the plaza was already filled at 15:00, and still had people in it at 20:30.[5]
The actor Juan Minujín was the only male to address the people during the event.[6] Other people that did so were Maitena, Érica Rivas and the relatives of women that died in controversial cases.[5]
Consequences
The judge Elena Highton announced that the Supreme Court of Argentina would set up a registry of femicides.
Murder of Lucía Pérez
There were further protests in October 2016, particularly in response to the rape and murder of 16-year-old Lucía Pérez in Mar del Plata.[7]
