North Middlesex Regional High School is a public high school located in Townsend, Massachusetts in Middlesex County. It serves grades 9-12 primarily from Townsend, Pepperell, and Ashby. North Middlesex Regional High School has approximately 1100 students.
According to the official North Middlesex Regional School District website, North Middlesex is a comprehensive school accredited by the New England Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. The professional staff includes approximately 75 full-time teachers, a library/media coordinator, an academic support center coordinator, 4 guidance counselors, 2 school nurses, a school psychologist, approximately 15 teaching assistants, 2 assistant principals, and one principal.
History
The school was built in 1957-1959 and an addition was added in 1972. The citizens of the neighboring town of Mason, New Hampshire expressed an interest in possibly joining the North Middlesex District in 2006. However, the choice was voted down by New Ipswich and other members of Mason's current school district.
In 2014 the towns of Pepperell, Ashby and Townsend voted for the construction of a new building. This building is planned to open in September 2017.
Extra-Curricular Activities
North Middlesex Regional High School has a long list of extra-curricular opportunities for students to take. The number of clubs, sports, and art programs available ensure that every student can find a way to get involved in the school outside of the classroom.
North Middlesex is known throughout the state for its award-winning music department. There are three vocal performing ensembles at North Middlesex. The women's choir, "Bella Voce," has received several gold medal ratings in recent years at state competitions. There are five instrumental performing ensembles, including the wind symphony, concert band, jazz band, marching band, and winter percussion ensemble. All of these ensembles have been highly rewarded in recent years for achieving a level of excellence unmatched by almost any other school in the state. The North Middlesex Tri-M Music Honor Society students also run Stars@Symphony, a two-day event that takes place at Mechanics Hall (Worcester, MA) and Symphony Hall (Boston, MA) which showcases bands that receive gold medal ratings from the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association.
North Middlesex is also known for having an incredible Relay For Life. In recent years, their Relay has been recognized as one of the top fundraising Youth Relays in the United States.
The service learning opportunities at North Middlesex are unmatched by any other school in New England. Several service learning trips occur each year in which many North Middlesex students are given the opportunity to serve various communities. Trip locations have included New Orleans, New York City, and Philadelphia. There is also a community garden at the school which harvests impressive amounts of food for local food banks.
Athletics
North Middlesex Regional High School hosts a large multitude of sports, they compete in the Midland Wachusett league, Mid-Wach for short. Their rival teams include Algonquin Regional High School of Northborough, Groton-Dunstable Regional High School of Groton-Dunstable, and Nashoba Regional High School of Bolton. They play Nashoba Regional during the Thanksgiving rivalry game every year. Their Varsity Ice Hockey team earned a Sectional and Division 3A state title this year. Girls and Boys Basketball both made the playoffs and Football made the playoffs for the first time in a decade. And Michael Neimi just recently placed 5th at New Balance Nationals for Track and Field and Chris Skelly won Lowell Sun runner of the year for Cross Country.
