Nshyugyezi Hydropower Station is a proposed 39 megawatts (52,000 hp) hydroelectric power station in Uganda.

Location

The power station will be located on the Kagera River, along Uganda's International border with the Republic of Tanzania. This location lies near the village of Nshugyezi, approximately 40 kilometres (25 mi), by road, southeast of Mbarara, the largest city in Western Uganda.[1] This location lies approximately 310 kilometres (190 mi), by road, southwest of Kampala, the capital of Uganda and the largest city in that country.[2] The power station lies approximately 13 kilometres (8.1 mi), downstream of the proposed Kikagati Power Station.

Overview

Nshugyezi Hydropower Station is a mini-hydropower plant, with a planned capacity of 39 MW. TronderEnergi, through its Ugandan subsidiary Tronder Energy Limited, owns the development rights to the project, together with development rights to Kikagati Power Station, located about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi), upstream of Nshungyezi. As of May 2015 feasibility studies are ongoing and a search for a suitable contractor is underway.[3]

Construction costs

At this time the exact construction costs are unknown. Within the last five years, TronderEnergi has successfully built the 13 megawatts (17,000 hp) Bugoye Power Station commissioned in 2009. That construction lasted 19 months and cost US$35 million.[4]
