Ocean Vuong (born October 14, 1988) is an American poet and essayist. He is a recipient of the 2014 Ruth Lilly/Sargent Rosenberg fellowship from the Poetry Foundation and a 2016 Whiting Award for his poetry.
Personal life
Vuong was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in 1988 and immigrated to the United States in 1990.[1]
He currently lives in Astoria, Queens, in New York City.[2] Vuong is openly gay.[3]
Career
Vuong received his B.A. in Nineteenth Century English Literature at Brooklyn College, within the City University of New York system, where he studied under poet and novelist Ben Lerner.[4][5]
His poems and essays have been published in various journals, including Poetry,[6] The Nation,[7] Tri-Quarterly,[8] Guernica,[9] The Rumpus,[10] Boston Review,[11] and Narrative Magazine.
His first chapbook, Burnings (Sibling Rivalry Press), was a 2011 “Over The Rainbow” selection for notable LGBTQ books by the American Library Association.[12] His second chapbook, No (YesYes Books), was released in 2013.[13]
His debut full-length collection, Night Sky With Exit Wounds,[14] was released by Copper Canyon Press in 2016; as of April that year, the publisher ran a second printing.[15]
