Oldbury Academy (formerly Oldbury College of Sport) is a mixed secondary school and sixth form located in Oldbury, West Midlands, England. It opened as a merger of Warley High School (formerly Oldbury Tech) and Langley High School (formerly Oldbury Grammar) on 1 January 2007. The head teacher, John Martin, led the merger of the two schools from 1999 to the present day.
Ofsted Judgements
The school was deemed to be 'OUTSTANDING' during an inspection in February 2011.[1] Since then, the school has been subject to two subsequent inspections in 2013 and 2015 in which it has been deemed 'TO REQUIRE IMPROVEMENT'. This is mainly due to a 'requires improvement' grade given in the Leadership and Management category as well as the Achievement of Pupils category. This has been the case in both the 2013 and 2015 inspections, showing no improvement even during this time of increased scrutiny from both Ofsted and HMI. Financial Information
Despite such falling standards, the schools annual financial statements show that in the year that the school had its outstanding judgement removed, the head teacher was given a pay rise in the region of £30,000 - £40,000. This can be seen in the financial statement submitted by the school on the bottom of page 29 [3]
The 2014 financial statement shows an increase in expenditures from £12,000 in 2013 to almost £140,000 in 2014 for 'legal and professional fees' this can be seen at the top of page 29 in the 2014 annual financial statement.[4]
Awards
The school has aimed to achieve the National Healthy Schools Award by bringing catering in-house and teaching the benefits of healthy living in lessons throughout the curriculum.[5] As part of the school's emphasis on sports, it has been awarded funding for a School Sport Coordinator scheme.[6] During the summer months, the school is host to West Bromwich Albion F.C. soccer camps.[7] The school also offers numerous sporting activities throughout the year.[8]
Media Attention
The school has been at the centre of national press attention on more than one occasion;
In May 2011 a former head teacher John Martin was suspended for allegedly 'head-butting' a student whilst investigation took place. Following police, school and independent investigation the malicious allegation was closed with no further action [9]
In June 2013, it was also alleged by Mr. Christopher Hill, Birmingham University lecturer and son of Mr.Robert Hill former Deputy Headteacher at Oldbury Academy, that the school offered £200 'incentives' for pupils to gain a C grade in English and Maths.[10]
Results and Achievement
In the 2012 set of GCSE examinations, 91% of students achieved 5 or more GCSE grades of C and above and 60% of students were awarded 5 or more GCSE grades including English and Mathematics. These results have steadily declined since 2012. The percentage of pupils achieving a C or above in GCSEs in 5 or more subjects, including English and Maths, has fallen to 43% in 2015.[11]
