The Oxford University Women's Lightweight Rowing Club (OUWLRC) was founded in 1984 to represent the University of Oxford in the race against the Cambridge University Women's Lightweights at the Henley Boat Races.[6] Throughout the season the club races as Tethys Boat Club.[7]
Membership
Lightweight rowing is defined for women as a maximum weight of 59 kg per athlete or 57 kg average across the crew. This is the competition requirement and entry into a lightweight squad may be above this weight.[8][9] The membership of OUWLRC is open to all female student members of the university.[7]
Facilities and training
The club trains on the home-water stretch in Wallingford alongside the other university squads (OUBC, OUWBC, and OULRC) out of the Fleming Boathouse. The club also uses the facilities at the university's Iffley Road Sports Centre.[10] Additionally, regular training camps are held both in the UK and overseas.
Racing
The key race of the club's year is at Henley Boat Races, which constitute the lightweights varsity race against Cambridge.[11][12] OUWLRC is one of the only entirely independent Women's Lightweight Rowing Clubs in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, the club competes at national head races and regattas. In particular, the club regularly competes and medals at the British Universities and Colleges Sport Regatta and in 2016 won a silver medal in the 8+[4] and bronze in the 4-.[5] The club also competes in international level, with a 4X- achieving bronze in Zagreb in July 2016.[13]
