Harbin Engineering University (simplified Chinese: 哈尔滨工程大学; traditional Chinese: 哈爾濱工程大學; pinyin: Hāěrbīn Gōngchéng Dàxué), also referred to as HEU, was founded in 1953 in Harbin, China. It offers over 150 degree programs, 48 of which are conducted in English.[1] Designated a Project 211 university, HEU is billed as a top institution for engineering and marine projects.[2]

History

HEU traces its origins to the PLA Military Engineering Institute established in Harbin on September 1, 1953. In 1970 the university was renamed Harbin Shipbuilding Engineering Institute (HSEI; simplified Chinese: 哈尔滨船舶工程学院; traditional Chinese: 哈爾濱船舶工程學院; pinyin: Hāěrbīn Chuánbó Gōngchéng Xuéyuàn).

The current name has been in use since 1994.[3]

HEU was one of the first universities authorized by the state to award master's and doctoral degrees.[4]

HEU is located in Nangang, in the heart of Harbin.

The university library occupies a six-storey building on the eastern side of campus. Particular strengths of library collections focus on nuclear and marine science.

Wifi access at the library is charged at 0.30 RMB per hour. Faculty, students, and staff with a university ID card may register for wifi access at the second floor information desk.[5]
