Paul Wilson (criminologist)
Paul Richard Wilson (born 9 March 1941) OAM is a New Zealand-born Australian author, sociologist and criminologist whose career ended abruptly with his conviction and jailing in 2016 for sexually assaulting a young girl.
Biography
Paul Wilson was born in New Zealand.[1] He has held academic appointments at the University of Queensland, Bond University and several American Universities. He also was a Fulbright Scholar.
He has authored 24 books on crime and related social issues and he is an occasional columnist for several Australian newspapers.
He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Australia Day Honours of 26 January 2003.[2]
In November 2012, Wilson was accused of child sex abuse alleged to have happened in the early 1970s. [3]
On 16 May 2014, Wilson was committed to stand trial on six charges. Wilson pleaded not guilty. [4]
On 23 November 2016 Wilson was found guilty of child sex charges including 4 counts of indecent treatment of a child under 12 years old. The first assault took place when the girl was 8. On 24 November 2016 Wilson was sentenced to an 18-month head sentence to be suspended once he served six months in jail. [5]
