Preston Symphony Orchestra
Preston Symphony Orchestra is an orchestra in Melbourne, Australia. The orchestra was founded in 1950 and is supported by the City of Darebin.
The orchestra performs four main concerts a year, including a Youth Concerto Competition.
The orchestra's past repertoire has included Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, Dvořák's Cello Concerto, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, Holst's The Planets; symphonies including Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Brahms' Requiem and several operas including Bizet's Carmen, Verdi's Rigoletto and Il trovatore and Mozart's Don Giovanni.
Conductors
Past conductors [1] have included Damian Richardson, Christopher Kopke, Phillip Green, Stuart Wilkie, Pat Miller, Steven Stanke, Willem van der Vis, Mark Shiell, Raymond Yong, Mario Dobernig and Mark Dipnall.
Leader
Suresh Brady has led the orchestra since 1997.
Soloists
Guest soloists have included instrumentalists; Alfred Hornung, Spiros Rantos, Brachi Tilles, Nehama Patkin, Sally Cooper, Rebecca Chan, Tristram Williams, Timothy Young and Mark McGee; and singers Rosamund Illing, Stephen Smith, Teresa Fanning, Jerzy Kozlowski and Marilla Homes.
Location
The orchestra is based at Preston City Hall and occasionally performs at Northcote Town Hall.
Youth Concerto Competition
The annual Youth Concerto Competition [2] is open to players of orchestral instruments and piano who are 18 or under. A complete work with orchestral accompaniment or selected movements may be submitted. As a guide, up to 20 minutes may be acceptable but, due to programming constraints, this may be shortened if too many successful candidates have long pieces. For unusual works please check the availability of orchestral parts: if these cannot be obtained the orchestra reserves the right to request a change of work.
Preston Strings
The orchestra has an associated ensemble,[3] Preston Strings, which provides an opportunity for young players [Grade 3+] to experience playing in an ensemble. Preston Strings rehearses prior to the orchestra, on its regular Tuesday nights at Preston City Hall, under the direction of Sophie Antoniou.
