Protoichthyosaurus is a genus of ichthyosaur from the early Jurassic of southern England. Two species are known, P. prosostealis and P. prostaxalis.[1]

Protoichthyosaurus was synonymized with Ichthyosaurus by Maisch and Hungerbuhler (1997) and Maisch and Matzke (2000), but an SVP 2016 abstract finds it to be distinct from Ichthyosaurus.[2][3][4]
