Quartier Latin International (QLI), or Quartier Latin, is a soukous band from the Democratic Republic of the Congo established in 1986.
Location
The band was formed in 1986 in Kinshasa). It plays in DR Congo and other African countries [1][2] and often tours in Europe and North America.
Creation 1990
The story all starts in the summer of 1990. Blaise Kombo, a former guitarist of Wenge Musica, was killed in a car accident. At the funeral, Wenge Musica invited all groups including Flash Musica and Koffi Olomide. Koffi Olomide very impress by Flash Musica performance especially the bassist Rocky Blanchard. Rocky is being requested by Koffi to enter the group and he accept it. Rocky Blanchard decides to bring his friends of Flash Musica to enter Quartier Latin (Koffi band). Suzuki 4x4 Luzubu, Willy Bula, Aladji, and Lebou Kabuya are being introduce. Later on, all others come including Jean-Louis Manzuguidi, Felly Tyson, Coco Tchomba, Didas Prof, Nseka Kudifela and Eric Bamba. Koffi Olomide's new young recruiters are being very appreciated by his fans of Europe.
Debut Pas De Faux Pas 1992
In fall of 1992, the group and Koffi released their first album Pas de Faux Pas, which was a great success. An album in which musicians put their own songs, such as Stilla by Suzuki 4x4 and the very successful song Ma Fille by Willy Bula (Blaise Bula's younger brother).
Noblesse Oblige 1993/Golden Record
The year 1993 marks the arrival of guitarist Beniko Popolipo, former guitarist of Zaiko Langa Langa. Koffi Olomide releases his solo album Noblesse Oblige. This album marks a huge success around the world and will receive a gold record. Following its success, many new members comes to the group including Babia Ndonga Chokoro, Eric Tutsi, Modogo Abarabwa, Bivens Bienvenue, Nsingi and Kaps Kapangala.
Magie 1994/Dream Team
In 1994, Skola Miel, former singer of Bozi Boziana comes to Koffi's groups and participate in new album Magie in which she will perform her song Dessin Anime that will transfer to album Ultimatum. The year 1994 marks the depart of Manzuguidi, Eric Bamba, Skola Miel, Aladji, Didas and the new arrival of Sam Tshintu. The album Magie releases in fall 1994. An impressive album but very critical. Many blame Koffi for copying Wenge Musica sebene and his animator Bivens copying ERoberto Ekokota (Animator of Wenge Musica) and lack of quality. Otherwise, Babia Ndonga a new tenorist marks his very successful song Amen.
V12 1995/New Golden Record
In beginning of 1995, Somono Dolce, Binda Bass, Ondo and Tshe Tshe de Balle are the newcomers of the band. 1995 marks a huge polemic between Quartier Latin and Zaiko Langa Langa due to depart of Koffi's dancers Rosette Kamono. By fall of 1995, Koffi releases his solo album V12. V12 marks another huge success and being congratulate by his rumbas. V12 will receive another gold record.
Wake up 1996/A short reconciliation
In 1996, Koffi Olomide and Papa Wemba reconcile after years of hostility. They decide to release an album together Wake Up. An album that will mark the greatest album and greatest duo of all times. One year later, they return back to rivalry. The year 1996 marks the departure of Bivens Bienvenue and marks a new arrival of Bouro Mpela, Pathy Bass, Mboshi Lipasa and Champion Djikapela.
Ultimatum and Loi 1997/Achievements
In 1997, the Congolese music introduce a new seben dance called Ndombolo that will mark a new history all over Africa. Koffi releases Ultimatum in Spring 1997. An album that really confirms Quartier Latin as the greatest band of all time. Ultimatum is a huge success all over Africa and to finish the year, he release Loi which officially marks a legendary album, number one album Koffi has ever made. 1997 marks the departure of Willy Bula and Rocky Blanchard and the new arrival of Mamale Tupac, Ridens Makosso and Montigia Tunga.
Final Years 98-99/Back to Back Gold Record
Koffi Olomide and Quartier Latin starts their year 1998 with many concerts around all African Countries due to their successful album Loi in which it will be a gold record. They later announce big concerts in Europe including Olympia de Paris (29 August 1998), Zenith de Paris (7 November 1998) etc. Koffi Olomide European Tour is a huge impact and during that tour he releases a new group and final album Droit de Veto. A very success album that gets a gold record. The year 1998 marks the arrival of Savanet Depitcho, Jf Ifonge and Gipson Butukondolo and the depart of Suzuki 4x4. That year will involve huge crisis in the group in matter of finance and injustice in which will led to its separation on February 1999.
End of a first generation 90-99/New Generation 1999
At the end of the tour 1998, several key members decides to stay in Europe including Bouro Mpela, Somono Dolce and Lebou Kabuya. January 1999, the groups goes to Africa on tour playing in several countries and lastly plays in Tanzania. After, Sam Tshintu and Modogo Abarabwa leaves the group and returns to Paris. Pathy Bass also leaves the group and joins his friends in Paris. By February 1999, Bouro Mpela, Somono Dolce, Lebou Kabuya, Sam Thsintu, Modogo and Pathy Bass announce their resign in Koffi's group and creates their own group Quartier Latin Academia. Koffi Olomide already aware of his musicians quitting on him, calls Eric Tutsi from DRC to recruit new young musicians. They played their first appearances in Stade Des Martyrs after the separation. Mboshi Lipasa leaves the group in spring of 1999 and joins Academia in Paris. By the end of his long recruitment, Koffi officially recruits Fally Ipupa, Lola Muana, Jordan Kusa, Mustapha Nkori, Sarabatino, Chikito Mutukatif, Spino La Djatence, Soleil Wanga, Deba O'neil, Cnn and Clovis Silawuka Bass.
Attentat 1999/Force De Frappe 2000
On 15 November 1999, Koffi releases his solo album Attentat with his new figures members. Attentat an album that is great but very critical. Many blamed Koffi for somehow releasing a radio version. From beginning of the year, Koffi announce Bercy for 19 February 2000. On that night, he receives a gold record for the third time in a row for Attentat and becomes the first ever African artist to play Bercy. By late 2000, he release Force De Frappe, a group album that has been appreciated by many publics and particularly Fally Ipupa with his song Eternellement in which he becomes the new star of the group. The year 2000 marks the depart of Savane Depitcho, Jf Ifonge, Sarbatino, Chikito, Do Akongo, Beniko Popolipo, Clovis Silawuka, Deba O'neil and Mustapha Nkori. Also marks the arrival of Montana Kamenga, Ramazani, Christian na Nzenze and the famous return of Bouro Mpela.
