Radiotopia is a podcast network run by Public Radio Exchange incorporating 16 podcast shows. Podcasts in the network are downloaded over 13 million times per month.

History

Radiotopia, founded by Roman Mars,[1] was launched in February 2014 with an initial group of seven shows.[2] Initially supported by $200,000 USD from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the network is run by the Public Radio Exchange (PRX) who described it as "somewhat like an independent record label".[3] In October 2014 a Kickstarter was started to support the growth of the network,[4] raising over $600,000 USD and making it the most-funded radio or podcast project on the site.[5] This money went partly towards including four new shows.[6] In May 2015 the network received a further $1 million USD from the Knight Foundation to add more shows to the network as well as hiring an executive producer.[6] This executive producer would be Julie Shapiro, hired in September 2015.[7]

Around the time of Radiotopia's launch the network's podcasts received around 900,000 downloads per month. This figure had increased to 7.5 million by May 2015 , 8.5 million in September 2015[6][7] and 13 million as of June 2016.[8]
