Railways in Kanpur

Railways in Kanpur began when the first passenger train in North India ran between Allahabad and Kanpur (180 km) on 3 March 1859. Kanpur Junction (today people called it Kanpur Purana) opened in 1859 and was closed after the opening of Kanpur Central, the present station in 1928.[1]

Track leading from Govindpuri to Kanpur Central via Juhi Yard is a spur route of the original route Govindpuri - Juhi Yard - Chandari. This is because, after the construction of Kanpur Central in 1928, it also linked to Lucknow in a more direct way.

Kanpur Central is, strictly speaking, not on the Delhi - Mughalsarai main line. Track connects Kanpur Central to Chandari on the Delhi - Mughalsarai main line, and is considered a cause of delays. All Delhi - Mughalsarai goods trains bypass Kanpur Central along the line that connects Govindpuri with Chandari.

Timeline

Kanpur-Lucknow

There was no double broad gauge line between Lucknow and Delhi. The railways decided to convert the Lucknow - Kanpur (72 km) metre gauge line to a broad gauge line. With the completion of this work in March 1993, there will be a direct double broad gauge line between Lucknow and Delhi for the first time. The existing metre gauge service was closed around 7 January 1992 and the broad gauge line was commissioned by 15 March 1992. With this, the Kanpur New Delhi Shatabdi Express was also extended to Lucknow. During the financial year 1992, the Northern Railway will convert a further 443 km of metre gauge track to broad gauge. The gauge conversion has become known as Project Unigauge.

Kanpur-Brahmawart

The Kanpur - Brahmawart railbus service (early 1990s) has been withdrawn.
