Symposium Hall

Symposium Hall is a former church in Edinburgh, Scotland, now owned and used as an events space by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and publicly known as one of the venues at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe each year, when it is managed by venue operators theSpace.[1]

The church was built, as Roxburgh Free Church, by the architect Thomas Hamilton in 1847.[2] In 1888, it was converted by architect John Kinross to become St Michael's Episcopal Church.[3]

In the late 1970s, the Royal College of Surgeons took over the building, which was by then in need of repair. With donations from Marks & Spencer and the Saudi Royal Family, it was restored, and on 5 October 1982, it was handed over to the college as the King King Khalid Bin Abdul Aziz Symposium Hall, with seating for 85.[2] The hall was further refurbished in 2005 and now comprises a tiered lecture theatre seating up to 158.[2]
