Sandara Park (Korean: 박산다라; born November 12, 1984[1]), also known by her stage name Dara (Korean: 다라), is a South Korean singer, dancer, actress, model, and host. Seen as one of the few most influential Korean stars in the Philippines due to the success of her multifaceted career, she was given the honorific national title "Pambansang krungkrung ng Pilipinas", and was nicknamed the "BoA of the Philippines" by Korean fans. She is recognized as a fashion and beauty icon because of her eccentric and distinct fashion style. Park is also acknowledged for acting as a bridge between Filipino and South Korean culture, and was given a plaque of appreciation by the Korea Tourism Organization for her contributions. Aspects of Park's personal life, including her relationships, family issues, and the fallout with Hero Angeles while still in the Philippines, attracted national attention as well.

Rising to fame in the early-2000's, Park became an overnight superstar while participating as a contestant during the first season of Star Circle Quest in 2004, in which she finished as the runner-up. She signed with Star Magic after the completion of the competition and officially began her music career with the self-titled extended play, Sandara, which debuted atop the Philippine charts and has sold over 100,000 physical copies. It remains the only album by a Korean born act to be certified platinum by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry. The carrier single, "In Or Out", was a major dance anthem and became a nationwide hit, cementing her status as an 'imported' household name in the region. The album's later repackaging featured a new single, "Walang Sabit", which became very popular as well. 2004 also saw her first lead acting role in the movie Bcuz of U, which won her the Best New Actress award at the PMPC Star Awards for Movies. Park continued to dominate the Philippines market through 2005 with the major success of her comedy film Can This Be Love, and the followup single "Ang Ganda Ko".

After suffering a stall in her career, Park returned to South Korea quietly in 2007 and signed with entertainment company, YG Entertainment. In 2009, she debuted as a member of 2NE1, the company's first girl group. The quartet became one of the most successful girl groups in South Korea, and have enjoyed critical and commercial success in both music and image, the likes of which has led them to be globally acknowledged. The group's company YG Entertainment decided to break the group after discussion whether to continue or let the members do solo career.[2]

Park's first single release in South Korea, "Kiss" (2009), showcased a more mature sound that sharply deviated from her earlier music. 2NE1's hiatus in late 2014 allowed Park to refocus on her solo career and in 2015, subsequently headlined the web-dramas Dr. Ian, We Broke Up, and Missing Korea. She won the "Best Actress" award at the K-web festival for her portrayal as Lee So Dam in Dr. Ian, and We Broke Up became one of the highest viewed web-dramas of the year. Park was a fixed host on the highly-rated variety program Sugar Man (2015-2016), and now currently appears as a judge on Pinoy Boyband Superstar (2016).

Early life

Dara was born Sandara Park on November 12, 1984, in Busan, South Korea. She was named after the revolutionary war hero General Kim Yushin, cousin to Queen Seondeok of Silla, whose childhood name was San Da Ra. She is the daughter of Ik-Su Park, a trading businessman, and Kyung Ran-Kim.[3] She has a younger sister named Durami, and her younger brother is an actor and former member of K-pop boy group MBLAQ Sang-hyun.[4][5] During the earliest years of her childhood, Sandara lived well due to her father running a successful business in trading, but following a strain incurred by relatives, the business went bankrupt and the family was sent into financial ruin. They then moved to Daegu before her father was forced to leave his family in 1992 for the Philippines in hopes of rebuilding his career. Dara often stepped in and took care of her younger siblings in the place of her mother since she worked long hours. Eventually, her father was able to stabilize his career, and in 1995, moved the family to Alabang, Muntinlupa City, Philippines to begin a new life.[6][7]

Career

In 2004, during one of her school activities, she met Pauleen Luna, a former talent of ABS-CBN Corporation Channel 2's Talent Center. Luna encouraged Park to audition for Star Circle Quest, a reality-based talent search television program.[8] Over the course of the season, she escaped elimination several times, and reached the final ten contestants.[8] Her Korean ethnicity resulted in some trouble with the daily exercises set by the panel of Filipino judges. During the last elimination round (in which only five people advanced), Park received approximately half a million text votes. She eventually finished in second place behind Hero Angeles.[9]

Park joined ABS-CBN's entertainment stable called Star Magic in the wake of her success in the show, with her projects ranging from commercial endorsements to television appearances. She starred in her first movie Bcuz of U (2004), a three-story movie.[10][11] She acted alongside Hero Angeles, Kristine Hermosa and Heart Evangelista. Park won "Best New Actress", her first acting award, in the 21st Philippine Movie Press Club Star Awards.[12] Park and Angeles launched their first solo movie, Can This Be Love (2005) which reportedly grossed almost 100 million pesos.[12][13] Park was also nominated for "Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Musical or Comedy)" at the 2006 Golden Screen Awards.[14] Her third movie in the country was D' Lucky Ones (2006) wherein she was paired with co-SCQ alumnus, Joseph Bitangcol due to Angeles' decision to retire from showbizness.[12][15] In the same year, her fourth and last movie Super Noypi was shown in Christmas 2006 and was an official entry into the 32nd Metro Manila Film Festival.[16] The success of Park in the Philippines lead her to star in a drama series. One was Krystala, a fantasy series with Judy Ann Santos.[17] She also acted in various series Crazy For You (2006) and Abt Ur Luv (2006) and television specials My Name is Sandara Park (2004) and SCQ Reload: OK Ako! (2004).

Park also embarked on a musical career that led to the release of her self-titled six-track album that contained the novelty dance hit "In or Out", a song that parodied her experiences on Star Circle Quest.[18][19]

In December 2004, YG Entertainment's Yang Hyun Suk offered Park workshop classes in South Korea after seeing the KBS Documentary My Name Is Sandara Park.[20] In March 2005, Park went ahead with the workshops, putting her career in the Philippines on hold. After six months, she resumed work in the Philippines, starring in several movies. She left the Philippines show business industry permanently and returned to South Korea with her family on August 1, 2007.[21] YG Entertainment announced the following day that Park had signed a contract with them.[22]

2NE1

2NE1 was one of the most successful girl-groups hailing from South Korea and are amongst the few who are internationally acknowledged by critics.

The group's name was initially announced as "21"; however, due to the discovery of a singer with the same name, the group was renamed "2NE1" meaning 'New Evolution of the 21st Century'.[23] Sandara took on the stage name "Dara", and was placed alongside Bom, CL and Minzy.[23] The group then collaborated with label-mates Big Bang for the song "Lollipop", before officially debuting on SBS's The Music Trend on May 17, 2009 where they performed "Fire".[24] 2NE1 has since released two eponymous extended plays, 2NE1 (2009) and 2NE1 (2011), and two studio albums, To Anyone (2010) and Crush (2014) in addition to several non-album singles. Their first EP spawned the number-one single "I Don't Care", which won them the "Song of the Year" award at the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards, making them the first rookie group to win a daesung the same year of debut (2 wins). 2NE1 returned with their first full-length album To Anyone in 2010 by promoting simultaneously the three title tracks from the album, "Clap Your Hands", "Go Away" and "Can't Nobody" after releasing the surprise single "Follow Me"[25] that took number one for the week of February 13.[26] The single was used as a theme song for Samsung Corby Folder.[27] The album garnered huge success and 2NE1 won an overall 11 times on various music shows from their promotions.[28] When combined, the downloads from the album made them the best-selling digital girl-group that year.[29] 2NE1 continued their winning streak at the year-end awards, walking away with many top prizes, most notably the "Artist of the Year" and "Album of the Year" awards at the MAMA's, where they won 4 awards out of the 6 they were nominated for.

Their second EP was met with similar success for the year of 2011, where all songs but 2 charted at number-one. The single 'I Am the Best' won them their second "Song of the Year" award and is widely considered to be their signature and most iconic song.[30][31] The song was used later as the background music for Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 tablet laptop commercial in 2014.[31] Due to its continued popularity, the song was re-released as a single in that year and debuted at #1 on Billboard's World Digital Songs chart, making them the first and only girl-group to do so and the second Korean act to chart that high after PSY.[32] In 2012-2013, 2NE1 released only singles, which produced the number-one hits "I Love You" (2012), "Falling in Love" and "Missing You" (2013). Both "I Love You" and "Missing You" won the "Digital Bonsang" award at the Golden Disk Awards, which is otherwise known to be the equivalent of Song of the Year. In 2014, they released their second full-length album Crush which spawned the number-one single "Come Back Home" and the top 5 hit "Gotta Be You". The singles swept real time charts[33] and was the most downloaded album for that year,[34] ultimately winning them the "Singer of the Year" award at the Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards for the month of (March). They were also honored by Youtube for the album's lead single, and were the only Korean acts featured on the list alongside Big Bang.[35]

2NE1 was unable to properly promote in 2014 due to a member's past legal issue that resurfaced through the media.[36] The group's only activity in 2015 was a surprise performance at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards in Hong Kong. After CL's performance of her solo singles "The Baddest Female" and the newly released "HELLO BI+CHES", all members reunited to perform their hit songs "Fire" and "I Am the Best".[37][38][39] The performance is now the most-viewed MAMA performance by a girl-group. The surprise MAMA appearance was applauded and as a result, was listed as one of the best performances of 2015 by Fuse.[40] On April 5, 2016, YG Entertainment confirmed that the youngest, Minzy, was officially leaving the group. 2NE1's contract expired on May 5, and Minzy was the only member who did not re-sign.[41][42][43]

On November 25, 2016, YG Entertainment announced the disbandment of the group. YG also revealed that former members CL & Sandara signed a solo contract, hinting at the departure of Park Bom from the company.[44]

Later career

2008–2009: The Return of Iljimae and solo single

Before her debut, she was cast in a minor role for the TV drama, The Return of Iljimae as Rie in 2008.[45][46] Later, she appeared as the love interest of label mate T.O.P, one of the members of Big Bang, in Gummy's music video for "I'm Sorry".[47]

In 2009, Park was featured on G-Dragon's solo album Heartbreaker, with their song entitled "Hello". They performed together a couple of times on music events, shows, and also during G-Dragon's two-day solo concert entitled Shine A Light in December 2009. Park later released a solo song of her own and was the first among the members of 2NE1 to do so. Entitled "Kiss", the song was produced by Teddy Park and was featured in Park's first commercial for Oriental Brewery's Cass Beer series alongside K-Drama actor Lee Min Ho. The song also featured fellow member CL as a rapper and peaked at #5 on the Gaon Chart.

2010–2012: I Need A Girl and promotion

In July 2010, Park was featured as the female lead in Taeyang's "I Need A Girl" music video.[48] Due to the specific lyrics in the song such as “a girl who looks better in pants than a skirt” and “she is old but looks young”, Yang told her she was the only candidate for the role. Two versions were made for the music video.[49]

Due to frequent updates on 2NE1's activities and her close relationship with the public, fans dubbed her as the groups PR manager and was consequently promoted to Communications Director on April 18, 2011. In order to make her promotion official, YG Entertainment gave Park her own Certificate of Appointment.[50]

On June 27, 2012, Park's Philippine Movies were shown in Korea. The films Bcuz of U, The Lucky Ones, and Can This Be Love were shown on the said date on Korea's Home Choice and SK Broadband.[51]

2013-2014: Return to the Philippines, My Love from the Star and What's eating Steven Yeun

In May 2014, ABS-CBN announced that Park would be guesting on Pinoy Big Brother, which simultaneously set off a media frenzy where the news of her return dominated both the Philippines and worldwide Twitter trending topics.[52] Her arrival was also one of the trending terms on Twitter, which welcomed her "home".[53] On the 15, she guested on the reality show Pinoy Big Brother: Uber (2007-2014) and the telecast All In Über as a celebrity houseguest during its live episode. She appeared on Gandang Gabi, Vice! as well, one of the most popular talk shows in the Philippines hosted by Vice Ganda. Park also shortly replaced close friend Yoo In-na as a DJ for her Let's Crank Up the Volume radio program from May to June due to scheduling clashes.[54]

Park made a surprise cameo appearance as a top actress in the last episode of the highly rated Korean drama My Love from the Star.[55]

On November 12, BeFunny Studios made an unannounced release of a 3-part mini web series starring The Walking Dead's Steven Yeun and Park titled "What's eating Steven Yeun".[56] Sandara played the role of Steven Yeun's American girlfriend who is left behind as her boyfriend pursues a career in "Mokbang", which is a popular Korean internet broadcast where generally attractive people eat in front of a webcam and get paid for it. The comedy sketch went viral and reached over a million views in the few days after release.[57]

2015: Web-Dramas and Sugar Man

In 2015, seven years after her last acting role, Park returned to the small screen through the web-drama Dr. Ian (Korean: 닥터이안), starring alongside rising star Kim Young-kwang.[58] Expectations were high as the series featured Park playing in her first leading role since moving back to South Korea,[59] and coupled with the involvement of director Kwon Hyeok-chan, who rose to prominence after helming Secret Garden, A Gentleman's Dignity, and Master's Sun,[60] the drama was highly anticipated as well. The series was globally popular, catching on in regions such as the United States, Taiwan, and Thailand.[61] Since its release, the drama has amassed views of nearly 2 million. The drama earned both lead actors praise for the roles, which resulted in Park winning a “Best Actress” award, her first in South Korea, and Kim a nomination for "Best Actor" at the K-web festival, the only Asian awards show geared solely towards internet bases dramas. She was the first recipient of the honor.[62] Upon the return of Korean hip hop pioneer group Jinusean, Park joined them on You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook to perform their very first hit "Tell Me", the single that propelled them to stardom.[63] Her natural performance impressed the group and led them to immediately ask her to perform their latest song "Tell Me One More Time' on their comeback stage in place of the original singer, Jang Hana. The collaboration aired on KBS2's Music Bank May 1.[64]

Park continued her acting venture by taking her second leading role of the year in We Broke Up (Korean: 우리헤어졌어요), a web-drama based upon a web-toon of the same name.[65] She played the role of Noh Woori, a character described as an optimistic and bright female preparing to get a job. Premiering in June, the series was a runaway success in and out of the country,[66][67] becoming the 4th most watched series on Naver by attracting more than 11 million views on the platform.[68] It garnered more than 16 million views in total from various official platforms it was aired on. The series was also invited to be screened at the 21st Geneva International Film Festival Tous Ecrans, making it the first web-based Korean drama to do so since the genre's meteoric rise in popularity.[69] Due to the popularity of the web-drama, fans were invited to a special mini-concert held on August 17 at Rolling Hall in the Hongdae area in Seoul to more closely communicate with them. There, they had talk session and performed original songs from the web-drama's soundtrack.[67] In the midst of the drama's airing, Park made cameo appearances as herself in the episodes 4-5, and 12 of the hit television series The Producers, playing a fictional 2 Days & 1 Night variety program cast member along with her ‘We Broke Up’ co-star Kang Seung-yoon.[70][71] Her performance as a fictionalized, snooty version of herself was praised and drew positive responses from viewers.

On September 15, Park was cast opposite Goong star Kim Jeong Hoon in "Missing Korea", a romantic-comedy set in the fictional year of 2020, in which the North and South are working towards unification through non-governmental exchanges and economic cooperation, leading to the first-ever ′North-South Joint Miss Korea Pageant.′[72] Though not as successful on the global market as her previous web-drama's, the series fared better domestically. Park's performance in the comedy received acting recognition and earned her another nomination for "Best Actress" in the upcoming 2016 K-web festival, making her the first idol-turned-actress to be nominated for the award in succeeding years.[73] The drama is also nominated in 4 other categories, such as: Best Actor, Best Music, Best Director, and Best Web Series of all Genres.[73] Park later joined the hit JTBC variety show Sugar Man from 2015 to 2016, alongside Yoo Jae-suk, You Hee-yeol, and Kim Eana as a co-host.[74] The show aimed to seek out once-popular singers, recreate their songs, and make it a hit once more in the present day. The first episode was officially broadcast on October 20.[75] The production team stated, "We think that Sandara Park has a unique strength that encompasses the emotions of the younger generation and the memories of the older generation. We predict she will actively radiate new, never-before-seen charms."[75] Park's close ties with YG Entertainment working as their public relations director led to her being directly involved with the talent appearing on the show.[76] Through her involvement, artists such as Akmu, Winner, iKON, and Lee Hi were able to perform on the show, and during an episode for which she wasn't present, friend and fellow actress Yoo In-na replaced her.[76]

2016: One More Happy Ending, One Step, Pinoy Boyband Superstar as judge and 2NE1's disbandment

Park started the year 2016 with a special appearance in the MBC drama One More Happy Ending (Korean: 한번 더 해피엔딩).[77] Park played the role of Goo Seul-Ah, the most popular and beloved member of a first-generation girl group called Angels.[78] Her character was described as an egotistical bully and as a result of her selfishness and constant belittling, the group disbands, but bolstered by her popularity, she becomes a superstar actress while the rest disappear out of the public eye.[79] The producer of the drama expressed the difficulty of casting an actress who could play the role as the other group members would be portrayed by "beauties" Yoo In-na, Jang Na-ra, Yoo Da-in, and Seo In-young while the character of Goo Seul-Ah was meant to overshadow them. It was because of In-na, who was close friends with Park, that they came in contact and the matter was resolved.[80] As part of a popular group herself, the production team for the drama stated that they felt that not only was she the best candidate for the role, her innocent and mature image made her a perfect fit.[81]

Park next big project will be a Korean film remake of Begin Again entitled One Step.[82] She will play a convenience store part-timer who seeks out a mysterious melody she hears every night in her dreams, and meets the producer of an Internet broadcasting program who tries to help her find out the music.[72][83] Actor Han Jae-suk is slated to play alongside her as the producer, and the well known music producer Kim Soo-Jin was brought in to help with the soundtrack. Popular webtoonist Mitty (Hong Seung Pyo) also signed on to help write the scenario. The film is set to be released in September 2016.[84] Park was officially promoted as YG Entertainment's public relations director.[85]

Park joined the judging panel of ABS-CBN's reality singing competition show Pinoy Boyband Superstar, judging alongside Filipino top stars Yeng Constantino, Vice Ganda, and Aga Muhlach. The show is based on the format created by Simon Cowell and first shown in United States through La Banda.[86] The show premiered on September 10, and became the most watched weekend program,[87][88][89] and the second highest program in television viewership nationwide.[60] As the show was still filming as of the day after 2NE1 announced the official disbandment, Park became the first former member to respond after the event by way of handing a handwritten letter in English to the fans on November 26, 2016, and allowed them to upload the contents on her behalf.[90]

Public image and legacy

Sandara Park is credited as one of the leading figures in the 'Reverse-Hallyu' Wave. Sandara was also dubbed the 'BoA of the Philippines' by Korean fans due to the similar success between the two, as Boa was the first Korean to break through the Japanese market.[91] She holds the national title of 'Pambansang Krung Krung ng Pilipinas' (The Philippines' national crazy or unique personality) given to her by her Filipino fans,[83] and her popularity in the region is likened to gag man Yoo Jae-suk's fame in South Korea.[92]

Face

In popular culture, Sandara is the icon of 'baby-face' amongst celebrities and the public, which is a term used to describe an individual who looks younger than their years.[93][94] Despite being born in the early 80's, Sandara is known to top and beat other competitors in survey's, often with a large gap between their ages, thus earning herself the nickname 'Vampire' for her youthful skin and look.[95][96] She is noted for having the ideal facial proportions, called 'the golden ratio', which is a 1:1:0.8 measurement of the face by plastic surgeons.[97] Attesting to the quality of her skin, she was described to be a popular choice for both advertisers and consumers, who would be drawn to her clear and seemingly pore-less face. In 2012, she was announced to be one of the most beautiful women of her time (80's).[98]

Fashion

Sandara features some of the most iconic and memorable styles in the Korean Industry, ranging from her signature tail lilt eye make-up, to her bold hair styles and clothing.[99][100] Labeled a pioneer of unconventional trends, Sandara's first appearance in Lollipop sporting her 'Palm-tree' hairstyle became the most famous and widely parodied style in 2009 and remains an iconic piece in K-pop.[101][102][103] In particular, her 2012 look, for which she had shaved a portion of her trademark locks for the promotional single "I Love You", attracted massive media attention and initially garnered mixed reactions, but was nonetheless praised for its shock factor and contradictory styling to the typical girl-group 'look'.[104][105][106] The style is considered to be her most noteworthy transformation.[107]

Park is one of the most in-demand faces in both the Philippines and South Korea, having appeared in many TV commercials and print ads over the course of her career.[110] Park's huge popularity led to her instantly signing many Philippine and foreign endorsement deals ranging from personal care and food products to everyday items at the end of the competition. Her first endorsement was for Dong-A pens.[111] Along with other Star Circle Quest finalists, Park modeled for and endorsed BNY Jeans in 2004.[112] She served as the face for Tekki Asian Classic Noodles, and helped promote Canon, a Japanese camera brand looking to solidify their power in the Philippines.[111] She endorsed Confident feminine napkins,[111] and Rejoice shampoo as well. In addition to the shampoo's advertisements, Park also contributed a single to go along with the brand.[113] Park also campaigned for Maxi-Peel with Kristine Hermosa. Following the revival of her career as a member of 2NE1, Sandara endorsed high-profile local brands without the group. In 2009, she became the endorsement model for Oriental Brewery's Cass beer series, one of Korea's most famous alcoholic beverages, alongside actor Lee Minho.[114] To help promote the beer, an accompanying music video and song was released to explosive nationwide attention.[115]

While promoting alongside 2NE1 for an endorsement deal with Mitsubishi's subsidiary Nikon Corporation, Park was solely chosen to become their main model for their new product Nikon Coolpix p300 camera.[116] Dongkook Kim, brand manager of Nikon Korea, stated that signing her would increase their products "attractiveness", and motivate buyers to purchase their items.[117] After her campaign debuted, the company reported a massive increase in sales that put them only behind Samsung, the largest business conglomerate in South Korea, for the year of 2012.[117] The company named the camera after her, going by the official name of "Sandara Digicam".[116] Park is also well known for endorsing makeup brands. Despite having already worked with Etude House in 2010 alongside her group, the makeup brand sought to continue with her for an additional two years with the belief that her image would be a "good influence" to potential buyers. Over the course of her endorsement with Etude, the brand was able to compete with popular local makeup companies and were launched to international success. An umbrella called Sweet Bunny was made available online and in stores to be given to buyers who paid for a certain amount of items.[118] The limited special not only increased Etude House's sales, but also attracted a foreign consumer base who, moments after Park was seen holding the item, visited the South Korean stores specifically to purchase the umbrella, where it was bought in every color.[118] In a week, Etude House sold over 40,000 of the umbrellas, ultimately selling out the product.[118] A representative described the reactions of the public as "surprising". The makeup brand won several web awards for their achievements in marketing, services and makeup as well.[119][120] In 2013, Sandara became the new makeup model for Clio, a well-established makeup company founded in 1993.[121] Immediately after, sites recorded increased sales and her 'bloody series' makeup became a top-seller.[122] The following year, the company's new mascara, Salon de Cara, was launched with Sandara as its model and sold out 130,000 units of its initial stock nationwide in only three weeks.[123] The mascara went on to sell a record-breaking 300,000 units in the months following. A fansigning event was held on the 14 of November as a thank you to the buyers.[124] Clio then closed the year with 4 awards, 3 of which were modeled by Sandara.[125]

In 2015, Sandara joined the likes of supermodels Cara Delevingne, Sean O'Pry, and fashion model/TV personality Kendall Jenner as Penshoppe's ambassador.[83] The following year, Sandara and G-Dragon was chosen as exclusive models for the cosmetic brand Moonshot launched previously by YG Plus in 2014, a subsidiary company of YG Entertainment.[109] Days after launching products released in their namesake, the product was sold out and required immediate restocking. A representative of Moonshot noted that it was the first time their products left stores at such a high rate and that the overall reservations had gone up substantially.[126] In June, Park became the new endorser for American shampoo brand Head & Shoulders.[127]

Aside from her solo endorsements, Park has endorsed Adidas, 11st,[128] Intel, Baskin Robbins, Italian sports brand Fila, Samsung, Yamaha, Bean Pole, and Nintendo Wii with her group.

Personal life

Park is quintilingual. Aside from her native Korean, Park is also fluent in English and Filipino languages due to her residency in the Philippines. She also speaks Chinese and Japanese.

During a promotional visit with 2NE1, Park was caught in the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan in 2011.[129][130] Feeling unwell, Park had remained on the 34th floor of the hotel she and her members were staying in when the earthquake hit. Members Bom and Minzy (who had moved to the 31st floor along with CL to prepare for their debut that was set to take place the next day) were quickly evacuated to ground-level. She experienced severe shaking and said that the building walls cracked and felt her body would fly out of the building at several points. Fearing for her life, she contacted CL, prompting the leader to walk up several flights of stairs to rescue Park. Assisted by a staff member, they walked down 34 flights and were relocated to a safer location.[131] They were included in FUSE's list of '14 Female Friendships In Music' because of the story.[132]

Philanthropy

Dara regularly volunteers for label-mate Sean's annual briquette charity event every New Year's Eve.[133]

In November 2013, Dara and her brother lent their support for the campaign effort "WEGENERATION" to help the devastated survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda. Having long considered the Philippines their second home after spending their childhood there, the Park siblings responded to the desperate situation by collaborating with both "WEGENERATION" and charity organization "World Share" to launch an online emergency aid fundraising system.[134] By January, they raised 3 million won (₱116,721) for the survivors.[135] In order to repay contributors, they exchanged their personal items as thanks for the donations.

In 2016, she provided her services to Purme Foundation Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital and donated gifts given to her by fans over the years to the children.[136]
