Sangeet Paul Choudary is an entrepreneur, author,[1] industry analyst, and advisor based in Singapore[2][3] who is best known for his analysis of and work with platform and network effect business models.[4][5] Choudary is the founder of Platformation Labs, an executive advisory firm.[6][7] He is currently ranked as a leading management thinker by Thinkers50.[8] He is also the co-chair of MIT's Platform Strategy Summit and is the "Entrepreneur-in-Residence" at the INSEAD Business School.[1] His articles have appeared in publications including the Harvard Business Review,[9] MIT Technology Review,[10] Wired,[11] and others.[2] He is also the author of two books: Platform Scale and Platform Revolution.[12]
Education
Choudary has a Bachelor of Technology in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and a Master of Business Administration from the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore.[6][13][14]
Career
Choudary began his career working for companies like Intuit and Yahoo.[15] His background is in early ventures, and he was the head of new stage ventures while with Intuit.[2] His time in the technology and media industry helped him formulate concepts about platform business models.[16] In 2012, Choudary founded Platform Thinking Labs (now Platformation Labs) and began writing at his Platform Strategy blog. As part of Platformation Labs, Choudary has advised Fortune 500 companies and high-growth startups.[2][16] He has also voluntarily advised startups through business accelerators like The Founder Institute[2] and 500 Startups.[12][13][17]
Choudary has written and spoken extensively on the topics of platform business models, metadata, and business technology.[4][18][19] He has been a guest lecturer at universities and institutions like MIT, and INSEAD, where he is also the current Entrepreneur-in-Residence.[1][2] He has also spoken at numerous conferences throughout the world. In 2014, Choudary spoke at the G20 Summit, Brisbane.[19] He is the co-chair of the MIT Platform Strategy Summit,[12] an annual forum that highlights platform-centered markets and how they affect global business.[20]
In 2015, Choudary released his first book, Platform Scale, which has appeared as an Amazon #1 best-seller in the categories of "Business Education" and "Research & Development."[12][21] The book discusses the platform business model and cites services like Uber, Medium, and Airbnb as examples of businesses that use the model. It also differentiates between the platform business model and traditional business models (referred to as "Pipes" because of their relative linearity).[22] Choudary's second book, Platform Revolution, was written in collaboration with MIT research scientists Geoffrey G. Parker and Marshall van Alstyne.[12] In May 2016, "Platform Revolution" was ranked among the best-selling business books by 800CEOREAD.[23]
