Sanjay Dixit is the Secretary General of Rajasthan Cricket Association[1] and runs the Rajasthan cricket team. He is a senior officer of the Indian Administrative Service.
Early life
Born on 15 July 1960 in Varanasi, he graduated as a Marine Engineer from DMET, Calcutta. He sailed with the Shipping Corporation of India till 1985 before joining the Indian Civil Services in 1986. He was allotted the Rajasthan cadre of the Indian Administrative Service in the 1986 batch.
Cricket administration
He has played cricket since his school days, but came into prominence when he led the Barmer district team to successive State championships in 1994 and 1995 when he was working there as the District Magistrate. Before that, he had led the Rajasthan Civil Service team with distinction. It was then that the district appointed him as the President of the District Cricket Association, Barmer. He fought the then reigning cricket family of the Rungtas, protesting their selection policies and the voting collegium. He teamed up with Lalit Modi and is credited with drafting the first ever Sports Law in the country, the Rajasthan Sports Act.
Dispute with Lalit Modi
Soon after the Act was promulgated, he fell out with Lalit Modi, ostensibly over his dictatorial ways. In 2009, he contested against Lalit Modi and defeated him in a famous election. Dissensions within the Rajasthan Cricket Association led to a fresh election in which Lalit Modi was defeated again and Sanjay Dixit was back as the Secretary General.
After another dispute in the fractious Rajasthan Cricket Association, he fell out with C.P. Joshi, the current President and he and Lalit Modi have become friends again.
Achievements
Under Dixit's leadership Rajasthan cricket team won the Ranji Trophy for the first time in 77 years in 2011, and its U-19 and U-16 teams recorded their best ever performances.
In 2012, Rajasthan Cricket team became only the 6th team in the history of Ranji Trophy to win back to back Ranji championships.
As head of education projects during 2000-02, he brought in reforms.
Introduction of Date Palm in Rajsthan was his brainchild. He also set up an International Horticulture Training Centre in PPP mode and successfully negotiated bringing in of date palm tissue culture technology from UAE.
Dixit is heading the Command Area Development department as its Principal Secretary and has launched an ambitious project to revamp the Chambal canal system.
