Magage Asantha Sanjaya Fernando is a Sri Lankan water polo coach and accountant. A former national water polo player, he was one of the two coaches of the first Sri Lankan women's water polo team. He is also the Group Financial Controller of the Cosmos Group.[1]
Early life and education
Born into a well-educated family in Colombo. At the age of six, while seeking admission to the Royal College, Colombo, his admission was denied. As a result, his family filed a violation of fundamental rights petition at the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka against the Government of Sri Lanka. Later the judgement was passed in favour of Sanjaya and he was admitted to Royal College.
He is an Associate of Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and a Chartered Global Management Accountant. He also holds a Masters in Financial Economics from the University of Colombo, Certificate in Treasury management and Forex operations from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and a diploma in Water polo from the Hong Kong Swimming Association.
Water polo career
Fernando started playing water polo at the age of 13, later represented Sri Lanka at the age of 18. He is the first goal keeper at Royal College water polo team to record an unbeaten season (2001).[2]
Coaching career
Fernando started coaching from 2005 and has coached water polo teams of Royal College, Sri Lanka Air Force, Visakha Vidyalaya and the national team. In 2009, under the supervision of Sanjaya, the women's team won the bronze medal at 11th Asia pacific water polo tournament held in Kowloon park, Hong Kong.[3]

Finance career
Having joined PwC as an Audit Associate in 2001, he joined ICICI Bank as a Senior Treasury Officer in 2007 before joining NDB Bank Plc as a Money market dealer in 2010. In 2011 he was appointed Group financial controller for the Cosmos Group which consists of 14 companies.
