- The Argentine magazine La Causa Peronista published an interview with Esther Norma Arrostito and Mario Eduardo Firmenich, in which they describe in detail the kidnapping and assassination of General Pedro Eugenio Aramburu.[1]
- During the Conference of American Armies in Caracas, General Breno Borges Fortes, head of the Brazilian army, proposes to "extend the exchange of information" between various services in order to "struggle against subversion."[2]
- The 31st World Science Fiction Convention concludes at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.[3]

- The world record for the Women's 4 × 100 metres medley relay in swimming is broken by the East German team of Ulrike Richter, Renate Vogel, Rosemarie Kother and Kornelia Ender.[4]

- Tropical Storm Delia becomes the first tropical cyclone on record to make landfall in the same city twice, when it returns to Freeport, Texas, US, two days after its first visit.[5]

- The Kenya Pipeline Company is incorporated, as a state corporation under Kenya's Ministry of Energy with 100% government shareholding.
- A requiem mass is held at St Anthony of Padua, Oxford, for J. R. R. Tolkien.[6]

- Faina Melnik of the Soviet Union breaks her own world record in the women's discus event at an athletics meeting in Edinburgh.[7]

- The 1973 Mr. Olympia bodybuilding competition is held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York City, and is won by Arnold Schwarzenegger.[9]

- The Italian Grand Prix is held at Autodromo Nazionale Monza and won by Ronnie Peterson. Jackie Stewart comes fourth, becoming World Drivers' Champion, in the Tyrrell 003-Cosworth.
- The 1973 World Aquatics Championships conclude in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
September 10, 1973 (Monday)
- Greek cargo ship Condor collides with Portuguese ship H Capelo in thick fog off Guernsey, Channel Islands, and sinks with the loss of ten crew.[10]
- A Chilean military officer reports to a CIA officer that a coup is being planned and asks for US government assistance. He is told that the US Government will not provide any assistance because it is an internal Chilean matter, but that his request will be forwarded to Washington. The CIA thus learned of the exact date of the coup shortly before it took place.[11]
September 11, 1973 (Tuesday)
- Chile's democratically-elected government is overthrown in a military coup after serious instability. President Salvador Allende, having made a farewell speech to Chileans on live radio (Radio Magallanes), allegedly commits suicide during the coup in the presidential palace, and General Augusto Pinochet heads a U.S.-backed military junta that governs Chile for the next 16 years.
- Art Garfunkel finally releases his solo debut album Angel Clare, 17 years after starting his career.
- Died: Salvador Allende, 65, President of Chile (officially suicide by gunshot)[12]

- In the Swedish general election, the Swedish Social Democratic Party remains the largest party, winning 156 of the 350 seats. The government continues in office as a minority government as the non-socialist parties and the socialist parties had the same amount of seats (175 each).[17]

- Indonesia and South Korea officially establish diplomatic relations.
September 18, 1973 (Tuesday)
- The two German Republics, the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), are admitted to the United Nations.
- In the wake of the Chilean coup, the Fourth International issues a statement entitled Defend the Chilean Working Class.[18]
September 19, 1973 (Wednesday)
- King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden is invested at the Hall of State of the Royal Palace of Stockholm. He chooses the title "King of Sweden" (Sveriges Konung), thereby ending a 400-year tradition of Swedish monarchs using the title "By the Grace of God King of the Swedes, the Goths/Geats and the Wends" (med Guds Nåde Sveriges, Götes och Wendes Konung; Latin: Dei Gratia Suecorum, Gothorum et Vandalorum Rex).[19]
- Died: Gram Parsons, 26, US singer-songwriter (overdose of morphine and alcohol)[20]

- The Battle of the Sexes: Billie Jean King defeats Bobby Riggs in a televised tennis match, 6–4, 6–4, 6–3, at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. With an attendance of 30,492, this remains the largest live audience ever to see a tennis match in US history. The global audience that viewed on television in 36 countries was estimated at 90 million.
- Died: US singer-songwriter Jim Croce, 30, and five others, killed when a small chartered plane crashes on takeoff from Natchitoches Regional Airport.[21]

- In the Argentine general election, the second of the year, former president Juan Perón's Justicialist Party wins 60.1% of the vote and Perón is returned to power after nearly 18 years in exile.[23]
- The Oakland Raiders American football team defeat the Miami Dolphins 12-7, ending the Dolphins' unbeaten streak at 18. It is the Miami Dolphins' first loss since January 16, 1972, in Super Bowl VI.
- Died: Pablo Neruda, 69, poet, diplomat and politician (prostate cancer)[24]

- Luís Cabral declares the independence of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau from the Estado Novo regime in Portugal. It is eventually granted in September 1974.
- Paris Metro line Porte de Charenton - Écoles is extended eastwards to Créteil - L'Échat.

- The ITT Building in New York City is bombed in protest at ITT's alleged involvement in the September 11, 1973 coup d'état in Chile.
- Dutch cargo ship Leliegracht sinks off IJmuiden with the loss of five of her eleven crew.[26]

- Yankee Stadium, known as "The House That Ruth Built", closes for a two-year renovation at a cost of $160 million. The New York Yankees play all of their home games at Shea Stadium in 1974 and 1975.
- The 1973 President's Cup Football Tournament is shared by Burma and Khmer after the final ends in a goal-less draw.[28]
