ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival (ShPFF), (Chinese: 上海骄傲电影节), is an annual LGBT film festival held in Shanghai, the most populous city in the People's Republic of China. It was first established in 2015.[1][2]

Background

ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival was established by filmmakers and people involved in the Shanghai arts scene, in conjunction with ShanghaiPRIDE, an LGBT group itself established to publicise a range of LGBT issues. ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival was, in turn, established to create awareness and promote tolerance for the LGBT community through film.[1] It was launched in 2015 to support new Chinese filmmaking talent. It also hosts workshops, Q & A Sessions and panel discussions with some of the leading figures in Chinese LGBT cinema. The festival takes place in June every year as part of ShanghaiPRIDE. Screenings are free and open to all.[2]

History

ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival first opened from June 12–21, 2015. In its opening year, it included open discussion about same-sex families, and some of the difficulties in raising families in China. Guests included two LGBT couples who have raised and plan to raise children, relatives, parents, medical experts and two sociologists.[3] In its opening year, it featured LGBT-themed films and documentaries, including live Q & A sessions. It also featured short films from around the world, and invited submissions from Chinese LGBT filmmakers.[2][4]

The Festival includes an Awards Ceremony in a 'Short Films Competition', in which filmmakers are invited to produce LGBT stories. Five awards are judged by film industry professionals, including major producers and distributors in the Chinese market. The top prize includes being presented at the internationally well-established Iris Prize and a chance for film producers to win funding for their forthcoming production. In 2015, this figure reached the equivalent of £30,000. Submissions to the Festival are made in November of the preceding year.[2]
